This week we have continued to look at fractions, finding fractions of lengths and quantities. The children have been using basic techniques of sharing, using fraction diagrams and lengths of paper, string and even strawberry laces to calculate 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 of these quantities. At home please keep reinforcing what 1/2 and 1/4 are as you divide things up. Be as practical as possible so children understand how to find these fractions accurately and quickly.

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 25th January
This week we have been focusing on completing tasks set. Ensuring we use our time efficiently and maintain standards of presentation and handwriting. The children were set the challenge of writing their own book a couple of weeks ago and as we draw to the end of this epic achievement the children have become very proud of their "Victorian" books. They include shared writing - writing that the children have done in a group with an adult, as well as independent writing. Come and see for yourself how much effort the children have put in, displays in the main entrance to school and in the classroom will soon be going up.
Praise assembly Friday 29th January
Lots of super Home learning has been coming through the doors this week, brilliant, particularly as many children have risen to the challenge of bringing in maths home learning!
A particular well done to Erica - who spotted that she was on the 'Hall of fame' on Mathletics this week! Number 84 in the world! A first for The Prince of Wales School!
In Praise assembly the following children were praised for:
Joseph - super reading aloud, tackling unknown words and reading to engage the listener.
Finley - great effort with finding 1/2 of numbers given this week.
Noah and Nicole, Erica and Rosa, Oona and Rohana, Finley and Henry - for super work in music this week, listening to the pitch in the song 'Looby loo' and then using the glocks to work out the melody!
Finally a special praise to Nicole - Nicole was heard saying to a friend that her head was hurting and then she told them that she would go and drink some water as that is good for headaches. We praised Nicole for her resilience and independence in front of the class, as she was trying to manage herself and had shown she was listening to strategies the staff say regularly to the children. Super stuff!

Time to dust off those Victorian outfits again! We would like to hold a Victorian drama day on Monday 8th February. Please send your child to school on this day in the Victorian outfit that they wore to the Priest House museum before Christmas. We intend to act out a scene from a Victorian Classroom, play Victorian games and have afternoon tea!

Superb Mathletes - 25th Jan
Year 2 managed to get 15 Mathletics certificates this week, amazing! Well done to all of those children who were presented their certificates in assembly today. The most certificates for any class this week, can we do it again next week? We need to work hard as I've challenged the other classes to try and beat our total. Keep up the hard work.
Maths Learning - Week Beginning 18th January 2016
This week we have been looking at fractions. Particularly halves and quarters, how to write these as a number and the importance of fractions being an equal part of a whole. We have tried to link this to our recent work on division so that the children can begin to see how the two topics link together. When you are cutting up and sharing things at home such as fruit, cakes, pizza etc encourage your child to explain what fraction they are cutting and how they can make the pieces evenly sized. For example for quarters they could halve and then halve again. Next week we will be moving on to finding fractions of a length, quantity and playing some fraction games.
Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 18th January
This week we have been using our historical knowledge to write biographies. We started at the beginning of the week writing a biography for Queen Victoria and after learning more about Florence Nightingale we wrote about her life and ordered sentences to complete the task. We were really impressed with the children's ability to retain facts about both of these historical characters!

Praise assembly 22nd January 2016
Another super week from all children, trying their hardest with their work. In literacy this week the children have been writing a biography about Florence Nightingale. In maths the focus has been on halving and doubling, linking to fractions and looking at whole shapes as well as amounts. A tricky area in maths so if you get the chance please look at 1/2 and what this looks like in different formats with your child. Much improved results for spellings this week! The children do get rewarded for getting all spellings correct. You are more than welcome on a Friday to look in your child's book to see how they are faring!
Praise assembly
William D - well done for achieving high score on Mathletics and achieving a Bronze certificate!
Katherine, Odette, Amalia, Erica and Nicole - praised for super LS Lowry pen drawings this week.
Amalia and Katherine have also been praised by Miss Johnson this week for improvements to their handwriting.
Noah and Poppy - praised for their biography of Florence Nightingale in literacy.
Keep up the super work Year 2!

Amazing Artifacts
A big thank you to the children who have brought in some real Victorian Artifacts.
Noah showed us a flat iron last week and Amalia has shown us some wonderful items belonging to her great, great, great grandmother. Pictures to follow!

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 11th January
This week we have been writing our own non-fiction texts. We have created our own information book about the Victorians including facts about Queen Victoria, Victorian Kitchens, A Victorian Christmas and much more, many of the things we have been writing about were seen when we went to the Priest House Museum before Christmas. We have been using photographs from the trip to help us remember what we saw. The children have been trying to use full sentences to write about some real facts about our past.
Maths Learning - week beginning 11th January
This week we have been working on our division skills. We have been sharing and grouping as well as using our times tables to work out the answer to division questions. When you are learning your tables at home, perhaps try phrasing a question as "How many 5s are there in 20?" rather than "what are 4 lots of 5?"

End of another super week of learning! 15.1.16
The class have been working super hard this week, learning lots of facts about Victorians and placing these into their own non fiction books! They so far have chapters on Victorian Christmas, kitchens and what life was like as a child. They will soon be ready to share, please keep a look out as they will appear on the wall when ready!
Spellings this week went well, it was pleasing to see a large number of the class getting full marks or close to scores. a few children need to get into their weekly practice a few practices, I explained to the children that this helps the new learning sink into our brains! Please repeat, and show the children how this routine doesn't impinge greatly on the 'out of school time!' A good start for their future learning.
Praise assembly on 15th January the following members of the class were praised:
* Finley Long and Poppy Trent - super pictures of LS Lowry factory scene using the IPADS art program
* Alfie Wood - super finding of facts towards writing his Victorian book!
* Scarlett Hoskin - super attitude to learning in maths this week when tackling division and linking this to multiplication
* Megan Gardener - for making super progress with her reading and learning her spellings
* Lewis Rogers, Odette Mistry-Dyer, Nicole Holland, Andrew Stevens, Avril Kwan and Finley Long - praised for super posters created using Pic Collage app, posters contained their goals and targets. They had to use skills such as importing picture, creating background, colour choices, text and saving their work!
* All the class's attitude to Home Learning! Lots coming into school each day, showing all children are interested and curious learners, brilliant! It would be lovely to see some maths work coming in too! Class marble was earned!

Sharing our Christmas News 4-1-16
This week year 2 have been set a challenge of reporting back to the rest of the class about what they got up to in the Christmas holidays. If you have any small reminders of Christams at home, for example
old cards, wrapping paper, cracker hats and toys or even a few photos of your Christmas please send them in with your child so that they can use them in their presentation.
