STEM week - Design, make and evaluate - reminders for the next two weeks of term

Hello everyone...nearly at the end of term!!

Last week all children took part in an amazing STEM activity where they had to design, make and evaluate. Their task was to make clothes for a wooden model. Firstly, they had to decide what the clothes were going to look like. Then they had to make these clothes. Once the clothes were made all children evaluated the process. Each and every child made the most amazing clothes for their model. These are on display in Brewery Square right by the ice rink. If you get a chance to go and see them, please do! This is an incredible opportunity for children to see their hard work on display.

This is also Christmas Technology day where children will be taking part in 3 different activities across the day. After school is also POWSA Christmas Fayre!

Year 2 - Week 4

Hello everyone, I hope you have all had a lovely weekend.

We have had yet another amazing week in Year 2. I can't believe how close the end of term is! These next three weeks will fly by with all the amazing things we have planned.

Last week in Year 2 we were extremely busy and took part in some very exciting and engaging activities. On Wednesday we went to Shire Hall to take part in a Victorian Workshop. The children represented the school so well, and we were all extremely proud of them. We learnt about a boy called Harry Parker who went to court at Shire Hall during the Victorian Era and looked through a range of evidence. We also went into the courtroom and the prison cells. Children also explored different Victorian toys and made their own peg doll. I will share pictures from this trip tomorrow as they haven't backed up!

We are coming to the end of our addition and subtraction unit in Power Maths and will be starting to look at 2D and 3D shapes this week. In Literacy we did a write up about our trip to Shire Hall using words such as first, then, after and finally.

Tomorrow marks the start of our STEM week....the children will find out all about this tomorrow. Remember to expect the unexpected!! Rehearsals for our Nativity will commence this week also. All children should have come home with their role. If you have any questions about their costumes or roles please email me.

Friday 2nd December is ELF DAY! Children are encouraged to come into school dressed as an elf.

Any questions, please email me!

This week in Year 2!

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great weekend!

This week in Year 2 we have been so busy and have been on many exciting adventures. The level of learning we have seen this week has been incredible. Every week the children make us so incredibly proud.

In Literacy/History we have been looking at Victorian houses and comparing these to our houses today. The children were so engaged and are showing that they are enjoying this topic. In Maths we continued to look at addition and subtraction. We've been looking at ten more and ten less. In Science we have been exploring plants and this week we learned what was in a seed. In computing we are looking at spreadsheets and how these work.

Here are a few reminders about the week ahead:

- Reading Records came home on Friday and should be returned to school EVERY Friday for staff to sign. Please log in the record every time your child has read. This can be their Book Bag Book or the library book that you have shared together.

First week of the second half of the Autumn term!

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a super weekend!

Wow, what an amazing week we have had in Year 2! The children have adapted so well to the new changes in Year 2 and we are so incredibly proud.

So what is new in Year 2? Every day we are now talking about what adventure we will go on, and the children are referring to their days in school as adventures. We have 2 main areas in and outside of the classroom. Adventure island and adventure kingdom.

Adventure island is our outside area. In this island we have 3 main sections. Water world - where children are playing with water linking to capacity, less and more, full and empty, and balancing. Builders yard, which is focussing on construction using large items. There are lots of opportunities for collaborative learning and problem solving. It is also great for improving gross motor skills. The last section is story kingdom which is the sand pit area. This encourages curiosity and creativity.

Adventure kingdom is the classroom. In here we have 6 different areas. Cosy club which is where the children work alongside an adult - predominately myself (Miss White). They are getting high level teaching and also supported well with their abilities. This means I can work with children in the moment and challenge them well. Book snuggle area where children can access a range of books. Tinker table which focuses on Maths skills and fine motor skills. Creation station, which is art related and encourages children to be creative. Small world/construction which encourages creativity and collaboration. Finally we have the invention station where children plan what they want to make and create things out of recycling.

The children are loving adventure time and we have seen some amazing learning and playing happening!

We are also lucky enough to have a dance teacher come in once a week to teach our children dance. We are focussing this on Strictly Come Dancing!

Children have been assessed this week in RWI. Some children may have changed groups and some may have stayed in the same groups. If you want to know how to best support your children at home please email me.

We also have a new member of staff in our class. We warmly welcome Mr Long who will be with us until Mrs Scott has recovered from her knee replacement!

See you all tomorrow!

HAPPY HALF TERM!

Happy half term everyone! We hope you have a great half term and have a great time with your families.

The home learning for half term is to find out facts about The Victorians. You can present this in any form, such as written in a list, made into a poster or even create a video. If you do decide to create a video please send this to:  a.white@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

Also, as mentioned in a previous blog, the way we do things in Year 2 will be changing a bit after half term. The classroom will look different and there will be more opportunities for the children to go on their own learning adventures. However, this will be planned well to ensure children are constantly learning and following the curriculum. This is following the works of Greg Bottrill who we had in school to share his wisdom and visions. The new timetable will be shared in due course!

We are asking for some items to be donated if you have these spare at home;

- anything that can be used for junk modelling - recycling from home

- buttons and string/wool, any spare materials

Nuts, bolts and washers and random metal things of interest e.g door hinges, keys, etc

- any small plastic toys such as animals, dinosaurs, small people

- small pieces of wood

- cardboard boxes (small)

- tubes of any kind

Thank you in advance, any questions please email Miss White.

Have a great half term!

The Year 2 Team x

Marble jar treat tomorrow!

Hi everyone, tomorrow the children will be having their treat for filling up their marble jar half way!

We are going to watch a film in the afternoon and children can bring in some pyjamas to change into for the afternoon if they wish! Also, if they want to bring in a teddy to cuddle whilst watching the film, they are more than welcome to do so!

If you could let families know on group chats you may have as I'm not sure everyone sees the blog. Children do need to come into school wearing school uniform and they can get changed into their pyjamas in the afternoon.

I am incredibly proud of how hard working your children have been during this first half of term! They really have earned this treat!!

Any questions, please email me!

Sunday 16 October 2022

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone! We hope you have had a lovely weekend and are ready for the last week in Year 2 before half term.

Again we have had such a busy and inspiring week!

This week we have been learning about woman superheroes and how they have changed the world. All children were so inspired by these woman superheroes and it has been amazing to see!!

In Maths we have started a new unit which focuses on addition and subtraction. One of the main things we have been looking at is number bonds to 100.

This week I (Miss White) was lucky enough to spend the day with Greg Bottrill who has shared his wisdom with me. Greg is an author and passionate advocate of childhood and the magic of children. There will be some inspiring changes happening after the half term which will be communicated with you. We have already added a few things into the classroom. I'm sure most of you would have heard about 'The Shush'......

The home learning for this week is stated below;

The children have filled up half of the marble jar which means they have a special treat happening this week. The marble jar is something that has been introduced this year. Children can put a marble in the jar if the whole class has done something amazing or if a group of children have made an adult proud. We are so impressed that the children have been able to fill the jar up half way already! The treat will be communicated with you this week one the adults have decided on this.

Thank you for attending the parent consultations and we hope that these were helpful for you! If you do have any more questions please email myself (Miss White).

See you all tomorrow!

Second week of Food, Faith and Farming fortnight!

Hi everyone, hope you have had a good week.

We have had a super week in Year 2! We have been so busy and have learnt so much.

We just want to start by saying thank you to those who came to the Harvest Festival today. I'm sure you were blown away with their singing like we all were. Thank you if you have practised at home with your children and have the conker song stuck in your head like we do!

We started the week by going on a trip to Sturminster Newton Mill. The children learnt about how flour was made and experienced a live working mill. We saw lots of different machinery and learnt lots of new facts. The children represented The Prince of Wales amazingly, and we were so proud of them!

We have also been lucky enough to have two different workshops this week. We had a humanism input where she told us all about her beliefs and the children took part in different activities. We also had an art workshop which linked to Christianity. The children had the chance to draw in their sketchbooks whilst listening to music.

We also had so much fun making bread for our harvest festival!

The home learning for this week is below:

We hope you have a great weekend! Just a reminder that parent consultations are taking place next week. If you haven't already booked an appointment then please make sure you do.
