Year Two Home Learning - Friday 30th April

Homophones

1. Homophones - words that sound the same but have a different spelling and meaning.

Can you find some pairs (or groups) of homophones?

Bear Bare

Eye   I

You    Ewe    Yew

  2.  Mathematical Problems to Solve. (Have a go. Some are quite tricky.)

There are 80 sweets in the jar. Mr. MacBean eats 30 of them. Mrs Howell and Mrs Bishop share the rest equally between them. So how many do Mrs Howell and Mrs Bishop get each?

Mrs. Barrow and Mrs. Bernard both give £15 towards buying “Snappy” the new classroom pet crocodile.

He costs £50, so how much more money do they need to save up?

Mrs. Bishop wants a new trombone which costs £100. She has saved £20 and her husband has given her an extra £25 for her birthday present towards it. How much more does she need to save up?

Mrs Barrow has £10, Mrs Bernard has £8.50. They want to put their cash together to buy Mr. MacBean a new hat for £30. How much more money do they need?

3. Spellings - See this week's list

Year Two - Home Learning - Design a Stamp to Celebrate the Heroes of The Pandemic

Royal Mail Stamp Design Competition

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, there have been many people who have done great things. Most of them are not famous, but they have done extraordinary work. These are the people who have helped us all through a really difficult time.

Millions of key workers have kept the country going when most of us were told to stay home for our own safety. And there have been many people who volunteered to help people in their communities who needed help or support.

We think that what these people have done makes them heroes, so Royal Mail wants to honour them by producing a set of eight stamps.

Some are frontline workers in healthcare, others look after elderly or vulnerable people. For more than 50 years Royal Mail’s Special Stamp programme has commemorated British history and achievement. Stamps have also been issued to honour the achievements of many British people. Often, the people who appear on stamps are already famous. They include scientists and explorers, writers, artists, musicians, athletes, and Prime Ministers.

Eight school children will become part of the history of Royal Mail and of the UK this year. The winners will become the designers of stamps that will appear on millions of parcels and letters. They will follow in the footsteps of Arwen Wilson and Ted Lewis-Clark, the winners of the last children’s stamp design competition in 2017.

One of the designs could be yours!

Young Artists Royal Academy Summer Exhibition - Last Call for Submissions

You may remember back in March, our last Lockdown #InspiredToLearn Challenge was all about Art!  If you did want to get involved I will need to submit your work before Monday 26th April.  Please email a jpeg of your artwork with a description by Friday 23rd April to be included.

Here is the information just in case you missed it!

 A #InspiredToLearn Artistic Opportunity

Now in its third year, the Young Artists’ Summer Show is a free, open submission exhibition for students aged 5 - 19 studying in the UK and British schools overseas. Artworks are judged by artists and arts professionals with selected artworks displayed online and on-site at the Royal Academy of Arts.

We just had to get involved!

What is The Royal Academy Young Artists Summer Show?

Artists are at the heart of everything at the Royal Academy of Arts – they’ve been championing them since 1768 and firmly believe in nurturing young talent and celebrating the next generation of artists.

Taking inspiration from the annual Summer Exhibition, the Young Artists’ Summer Show is an opportunity for young artists aged 5 - 19 years to exhibit their work online and on-site at the Royal Academy.

The project is generously supported by Robin Hambro, a passionate advocate for the importance of access to art, and the benefits of encouraging the arts, for children and young people.

A panel of passionate and award-winning artists and arts professionals work together each year to select artworks to exhibit online and on-site at the Royal Academy.

Your artwork could be among those the judges select this year!

How do I enter?

We are registered as a school and you can submit up to 3 pieces of artwork, these can be works of art created at home or in school, in the past or something you are working on currently.  They can also be collaborative pieces that have been created by you with support of a group of other children.  There is no set theme or media for your artwork - It can be a painting, sculpture, photograph, installation, video, drawing, or a combination.

For each artwork submission you will need a jpeg image/s of the artwork along with details including a title, medium and a short description, child’s name and age.  Please see the attached guide for taking your photos.

Send your photos to a.johnson@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

Please also complete the attached permission form and hand in to the school office.  Your picture will then be submitted by us and you will receive confirmation via a return email from us and everyone who submits work will hear from the Royal Academy by the end of May.

The closing date for submissions is 26th April 2021

The full terms and conditions are available on the Royal Academy Website.

What happens next?

Your artwork will be seen by a panel of judges and the selected pieces will be shown in our online exhibition. Some of the artworks will also be selected to be shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Prizes

Prizes are awarded each year for two inspiring artworks from each key stage, as chosen by the President of the Royal Academy, and you can also vote for your favourite artwork in The Royal Academy’s annual People’s Choice Award.
