Year 2 - Spellings - 30th June 2017

This week spellings will roll on to next week due to our class trip.  Please carry on looking at the common exception words as well.

Year 2 - Home Learning - 30th June 2017

Y2 – Home learning – 30th June 2017
This week I would like your help in getting together a superhero costume for your child to wear in the class assembly on Friday 7th July.  The costume could be one that your child has already; you could make one out of leggings, fabric for capes, etc or if your child prefers it could just be a t-shirt with a superhero symbol on or a mask.  Your child will also need a shirt to wear over the top!  Please bring the costume into school next week in a named plastic bag in preparation for Friday’s assembly.
We have also provided a script for the children who might need to practice reading their lines.  They don’t need to learn these off by heart, but will need to read them fluently for the performance.  Please encourage your child to read them through, but no cheating and spoiling the surprise by reading the script yourself!
Lastly, please come along and see our assembly from 9:20am on Friday.
Kind Regards
The Year 2 Team

Year 1 to Year 4 - Mathletics Mayhem - 30th June 2017

Mathletics has set us a challenge competition!  Over the next two weeks we will be working towards helping each child achieve enough points to get a certificate.  If there is enough participation we might stand a chance at winning one of the prizes on offer for our school!  The purpose of this challenge is to familiarise the children with the new look Mathletics website.  Please could you help out by using your child's Mathletics log in with them at home?  Or you could try the Mathletics app on your tablet.  There will be an opportunity for each class to access mathletics at one playtime per week as well as through their maths lessons and ICT time.  Let's see how many points we can earn!
If your child is uncertain of their log in please ask a member of your child's class team.

Monday 3rd July - DASP Literacy Festival visit to Thomas Hardye School to see a visiting author 1pm - 2:30pm.
Wednesday 5th July - 1610 to watch the year 4 swimming gala.  We would like to give the children the opportunity to see what it is like to go swimming in preparation for year 3 and to cheer on year 4 at the same time.  If possible we will walk to the leisure centre with year 4.  To do this we will need the children to be at school for 8:30 so that we could walk to the leisure centre.  We will return to school for 10:20am after watching year 4.  Please let us know if you would like to meet us there or if you would prefer to bring your child to meet us at the leisure centre on this day.
Thursday 6th July - Year 2 will be spending the afternoon in their new classroom with their year 3 teacher.
Friday 7th July - Year 2 class assembly.  Please come along and see what we have been learning about this term as well as celebrating our achievements in year 2.  9:20am in the school hall.
We will also be skipping at some point on Friday 7th as part of our health and safety week.
Wednesday 12th July - Trip to Dorchester Museum - Jurassic Gallery.  Please let us know if you are available to help or if you would like to transport your child rather than have them walk there and back.
Wednesday 19th July - Our Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Wonka Day.  Please send your child to school dressed as a character from the story.  There will be an afternoon party to reward the children's hard work.  A food list will go up shortly.  Also, look out for Wonka's pop up shop opening after school for a few little goodies!

Year 2 - STEM week continued...

What a wonderful week in year 2!  The engagement in learning was brilliant, so much questioning and so much hands on learning.  The year 2 children have been busy writing reports about the week which you must come and read.  Making telephones, BIG bubbles, water transporters, moving machines, catapults, musical instruments and much much more.  Thank you to all of the parents who were able to come in and support and support at home with the home learning tasks.  A great week which we will definitely repeat!

STEM week

Well, what a week!
STEM week ended this week in Year 2 by watching a whole school experiment with coke and Mentos mints and this exploding all over Mrs Johnson!
Lots of helicopters, aeroplanes and telephones have been made.
The children have thoroughly enjoyed making bubble mixture this week and blowing bubbles into bubbles.
Thank you also to everyone in helping the 'Catapult making' a huge success. So many children were resilient for the hour and a half in completing them, they were very proud of themselves as we were of them.

Next Friday the class are going to Weymouth Safety centre for our trip. If you are able to come along on this trip then please do offer your name forward!

Thank you!

Year 2 STEM week Special Assignment!
Do you like building?
Have you ever tried to build a tower as high as you possibly can?
Here is the challenge:
Have a go at building a tower out of mini marshmallows and cocktail sticks!  How high can you go?  Take a picture of what you manage to achieve or measure how high you got and come back to school and tell us how you got on!  Next week we will be improving out tower building techniques using a variety of materials!
Have fun!

Y2 - STEM Week - 19th-24th June

This week we will be enjoying a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths themed week.  The children will be finding out about the science of bubbles and ice, building towers, constructing fairground rides, using pneumatics and hydraulics, measuring and experimenting throughout the week.  On Thursday afternoon you are invited to come and join us for our class experiment.  Please come along and join in the fun.

Y2 - Spellings - Friday 9th June to be learned for Friday 16th

This week we are revising use of the apostrophe and so are recapping on these spellings:
Red group: couldn't, wouldn't, they'll, we'll, she'll, you'll, shouldn't, I'll, he'll
As a challenge I would like you to find more words that use an aposrophe.
Orange and Yellow group: shouldn't, couldn't, wouldn't, we'll, you'll
As a challenge I would like you to find out more about why we use apostrophes.
Other group spellings are to revise their sounds and can be found on the printed spelling sheet bought home.

Y2 - Maths Learning - Week Beginning 5th June.

This week we have been using our addition and subtraction skills to help us solve more complicated problems that have two steps to solve them.  The children have used their knowledge of addition and subtraction to solve these.  At home try adding and subtracting multiples of 10 to or from a number.
For example 74-40.  The children should know that 40 is 4 tens so 70-40=30 and 74-40=34.  You could also try counting forwards and backwards in 10s and in 1s over tricky boundaries: Count back 7 from 52.  Next week we will be revising our formal methods for addition and subtraction and also counting on or back from a given number.

Y2 - Literacy Learning - Week beginning 5th June

This week we have completed our collaborative learning task from before the holidays.  The children worked in small groups to create a save the sea turtles campaign.  They have made posters, gathered information and made their own fact sheets about sea turtles.  It was wonderful to see how well the children worked together, supported each other and compromised!
We have also looked at how we can describe people both real and fictional.  We have read and sorted facts about three famous people from Dorchester's past: William Barnes, Judge Jefferys and Thomas Hardy.  We have also begun to look at how Roald Dahl describes the people in his stories.  We will continue with this next week, specifically looking at our use of adjectives (describing words).

Monday 12th June - Bike Breakfast

“Bike Breakfast” at the Prince of Wales School!

On Monday 12th June, we are holding another “Bike Breakfast” event! This is to encourage pupils, parents and staff to get on their bikes and scooters for the journey to school. From 8.40am until 8.55am, there will be drinks and snacks for everyone who cycles or scoots to school.

I hope we can tempt you onto two wheels to help the school get more children active on the school journey. It is fun and healthy and the roads around school will be much calmer if fewer people drive!

We look forward to seeing you there,

DM
