Next Friday we will be donning our wellington boots and heading to the farm. We always look forward to our visits to Maiden Castle Farm. Hazel always shows us something new and exciting. On this visit we will be thinking about harvest and what is happening at this time of the year on the farm. This will be very useful in the run up to harvest, developing the children's understanding of the processes involved in bringing food to our tables! Please ensure your child has appropriate outdoor wear including wellington boots and trousers they don't mind getting dirty! We will be heading to the farm at 9am on Friday 22nd September and will be back in time for lunch. If you would like to help on this trip please see a member of the year 2 team.Friday, 15 September 2017

Year 2 - Maths Learning - Week Beginning 11th September 2017
This week in Maths we have been looking at Place Value and how we can use it to help support our calculations. The children already had a very good understanding of counting in 10s and 1s forwards and backwards. We have built on this by looking at counting in 10s when you don't start at 0. For example: 4. 14, 24, 34, 44, 54...The children have begun to spot patterns in their work and through using lots of equipment have shown they can investigate two-digit numbers and their value. We have also spotted some crocodiles in year 2 (beware they like to eat big numbers). Why not see if your child can draw the two arrows or use these pictures of crocodile to say which of a pair of numbers is larger. Remember, the crocodile has to eat the bigger number.
Start with one digit numbers, then two, then three, for a challenge why not try measures such as: 400g and 1kg, which is bigger? In addition you may like to use these place value cards to build number up to 99. Simply print out, cut up and place hundreds, tens and ones cards together so that the arrows line up, great to play number games with.
Year 2 - Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 11th September
This week in year 2 we have kick started our India topic by looking at some of the animals you might find in India. The children were challenged to write sentences about tigers and other animals. Over the week we have built up our skills, reminding ourselves of what a sentence needs to make sense. We have looked at adjectives (describing words) and verbs (doing words) and how we can improve our sentences by using exciting vocabulary. Violet Vocabulary our class superhero who likes "Wow" words has been flying around the classroom in search of amazing vocabulary. We have been overwhelmed with how the children have risen to the challenge, their work has not only improved since Monday, but some children have even been demonstrating these skills by writing at home and bringing their learning into class. Well done year 2! We are going to have an awesome year!Wednesday, 13 September 2017
Year 2 - Cursive Alphabets - 13th September 2017
The children have all brought home a copy of an upper case and lower case alphabet today. As part of our focus on handwriting and writing we are looking at how we form letters and also ensuring we know all our capitals. Please keep the alphabet at home so that the children can refer to it whenever they are writing. We have been really impressed at how much the children have improved their written work in the last two days, keep up the hard work year 2!Please note that some children have a slightly different version of this to best support their needs.
Year 2 - Eco Poster Competition - 13th September 2017
Please look out for the Eco Poster Competition launched today! The children are being invited to design a poster to encourage people to put their litter in the bin! You can be as creative as you like and use whatever media you like. There are three weeks to complete your finished design and return them to your class teacher. Lets get creative!!
