This week in Maths we have been looking at Place Value and how we can use it to help support our calculations. The children already had a very good understanding of counting in 10s and 1s forwards and backwards. We have built on this by looking at counting in 10s when you don't start at 0. For example: 4. 14, 24, 34, 44, 54...
The children have begun to spot patterns in their work and through using lots of equipment have shown they can investigate two-digit numbers and their value. We have also spotted some crocodiles in year 2 (beware they like to eat big numbers). Why not see if your child can draw the two arrows or use these pictures of crocodile to say which of a pair of numbers is larger. Remember, the crocodile has to eat the bigger number.
Start with one digit numbers, then two, then three, for a challenge why not try measures such as: 400g and 1kg, which is bigger? In addition you may like to use these place value cards to build number up to 99. Simply print out, cut up and place hundreds, tens and ones cards together so that the arrows line up, great to play number games with.
