Year 2- Week 5

Week 5: Another week of wonderful learning and adventure!

And just like that, we have reached the end of Week 5 in Year 2! What another fantastic week we have had. I continue to be blown away by the children's enthusiasm, creativity and determination in everything they do. Their writing has been incredible this week, and it has been wonderful to see their handwriting improving day by day. The pride they are taking in their work is really shining through, and I couldn't be happier with the progress they are making! ✨

📚 ENGLISH

This week, we have moved on to our new book, The Bear and the Piano. The children have been working hard to make their sentences longer and stronger by using conjunctions, exploring modal auxiliary verbs such as could, would and should, and learning how to use contractions, such as do + not = don't. We have been putting all of these skills into practice in our writing, and the children are becoming more confident at making thoughtful vocabulary and sentence choices. Their writing really has been a joy to read!

We have also been enjoying a little Roald Dahl magic during our class story time! So far, we have read The Twits and George's Marvellous Medicine, and we are nearly at the end of our third book, The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, which the children are absolutely loving! It has been lovely to share these stories together and see their excitement as we discover what happens next.

🔢 MATHS

In Maths, we have been learning all about comparing and ordering numbers. The children have been practising how to identify which numbers are greater than or less than others, using the symbols < and > to show their understanding. We have also been ordering numbers from greatest to smallest and smallest to greatest. This has involved lots of careful thinking, checking and explaining our reasoning. The children have worked really hard to develop their confidence with these skills!

🗺️ GEOGRAPHY

This week in Geography, we became real-life cartographers! A cartographer is someone who creates maps, so we put our skills to the test by exploring our school and creating our very own maps. We imagined that we were looking at our school from an aerial perspective, as though we were high above it looking down. The children had to think carefully about the different features they could see, where they were positioned and how they could represent them on a map. It was fantastic to see them getting outside, exploring and putting their map-making skills into practice!

🥦 SCIENCE

We have continued our learning about healthy eating and what our bodies need to stay healthy. This week, we focused on understanding what makes a balanced diet. We tackled a common misconception that eating only fruit and vegetables is enough to be healthy. Instead, we explored why our bodies need a variety of foods from all the different food groups, in the right proportions, to give us the nutrients and energy we need to grow, learn and play. The children have been developing a much better understanding of why balance and variety are so important!

🐳 RE

In RE, we have been exploring the story of Jonah and the Whale. We learnt how Jonah tried to run away from God's instructions, found himself caught in a terrible storm and was swallowed by a great fish. After spending three days inside the fish, Jonah prayed to God and was given another chance to do what he had been asked to do. We talked about the different feelings Jonah might have experienced throughout the story and then created our own whales with Jonah inside! The children wrote about what they thought Jonah might be feeling, thinking carefully about his experiences and emotions.

🚒 FIRE SAFETY ASSEMBLY

Friday brought an exciting opportunity for some of our Year 2 children to take centre stage! During our fire safety assembly, the children took on some fantastic acting roles at the front of the hall, helping to demonstrate the importance of fire safety. They showed wonderful confidence, enthusiasm and bravery in front of the school, and it was lovely to see them getting involved in such an important message. A huge well done to everyone who took part!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I cannot wait to see what week 6 brings!
