Following our 'problem-solving' in Mathematics this week, we would like to set the children this puzzle from the "End of Unit Check" in our Power Maths books. It's quite tricky, so you'll have to grapple with it.
(We did run through how to get to the answer at school.)
What you need:
Get 9 small pieces of card/paper.
Write the numbers 1 to 9 on a piece of card/paper.
You now have cards with the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Here's the challenge: Can you make three unequal piles of cards that total the same amount?
Record like this: pile 1: _____. pile 2: ______ pile 3: ______
There is more than one answer..... How many ways can you find?
