This week we have started a new unit of work on Multiplication. We have been specifically been looking at the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and what the multiplication sign means. Many of the children have been confidently counting in 2's, 5's and 10's for some time, but now they need to start memorising some times table facts and understanding that multiplication means "lots of" or "groups of". How about arranging some objects at home in groups of 2 or 5 and seeing if your child can work out how many there are quickly? The aim is to get them to recognise that there are quicker and more efficient ways of calculating than counting in ones and adding many multiples such as 5+5+5+5+5+5+5= . If you can double or count in 5s or 10s to work it out it is much quicker!
