Y2 Maths Learning - Week Beginning 23rd January 2017

This week in Maths we have been looking at division.  We have used grouping and sharing as methods for calculating division facts.  We are also beginning to link division to multiplication and use our times tables to help to work out division questions.  Why not see if your child can share things out fairly or put objects into groups at home?

Y2 Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 23rd January 2017

This week we have been researching the life of Florence Nightingale.  Following our Victorian Drama day on Monday where the children visited the Crimea with Florence - the lady of the lamp, the children have been finding out more facts about her by reading and looking at paintings and pictures of her work.  We have used this information to write biographies of Florence and complete our Victorian Books.  We have focused on our presentation again in these writing tasks.

Y2 - Spellings - 27th January 2017 for 3rd February 2017

This week the spellings are as follows:
Red and Orange Groups: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.  An additional challenge is to learn how to spell the months of the year.
Yellow and Green groups: One, two, three, four, five, six an additional challenge would be to learn to spell more number words.
Spellings will be checked on Friday 3rd February.

Y2 - Visitor - 26th January 2017

Many thanks to Adeel who came to visit year 2 this morning.  Adeel is a doctor at Dorchester Hospital and a practicing Muslim, he came to tell us about how a Muslim prays and how this is part of his everyday life.  The children listened beautifully and came up with some fantastic questions for him:
How do you pray?
How long do you pray for?
Do you believe in Jesus?
Can you pray on an aeroplane?
Where is the biggest mosque?
Do you pray with other people?
Why do Muslims pray?

We learned a lot from Adeel and this really helped us understand our currant RE topic.

Praise assembly - week ending 20th January 2017

So, this week in Praise assembly we looked at the weekly spelling scores and selected children in the class who are showing promising signs of improving their weekly scores.
Well done goes to:

Jamie, James, Rubi, Inzi, Clark, Sophie, Nell and Mai!

In art this week, the class have been studying the school building closely and have been using pen to place in the finer details on a outline of the school. Super concentration was required and continual observations to check their work.

Well done goes to:

Euan, Nell, Freddie, Isabelle, Josie, Sunny and Bradley!

Next week the focus will be upon children who are presenting their writing superbly throughout the curriculum. I wonder who will be praised children?!

Y2 - Home learning - 20th January 2017

A useful website which offers games to support children in learning their tables is:
http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/times-tables
please have a look, the first game is also tablet friendly.  Or you might like to print out the 2 times table matching cards game (please note that they are not matched on these images, you need to find 4 cards which have the same multiplication displayed on them. Happy times tabling!

Y2 - Spellings - 20th January 2017

This week's spellings are more common exception words
Red Group: money, clothes, busy, people, water, again, beautiful
Orange and Yellow Group: great, every, break, steak, pretty, father
Green Group: of, are, they, my
These will be checked on Friday 27th January.

Y2 Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 16th January 2017

This week we have been focusing on our presentation skills and ensuring that our handwriting is as neat as it can be.  We have talked about how we can be successful with this.  Using a sharp pencil, sitting correctly, focusing and concentrating and slowing down were all elements that the children were working on.  Using their neat handwriting they have nearly completed their Victorian Information booklets started last week.  This now also includes a biography of Queen Victoria!  Well done year 2, keep up the super presentation.

Y2 - Maths Learning - Week Beginning 16th January 2017

This week we have been getting even more confident with our 2, 5 and 10 times tables.  The children are now more able to draw pictures to represent multiplications and some children are really quick at recalling their times tables facts.  Next week we are going to link our multiplication facts to division, so if we know that 2x5 is 10 we also know how many 5s make 10.  Turning multiplication facts around is a good way of ensuring your child really understands the concept of multiplication.
Try these:
How many 2s in 8?
How many 5s in 30?
How many 10s in 90?
Try similar questions at home and draw pictures to show the calculations.  For this picture you could ask: How many 5s in 15?

Praise Assembly 13th January 2017

Praise assembly for this week recognised super spellers:

Isabelle - since September has not dropped one mark - well done!

Eva and Alfie B - since September they have both only dropped one mark - well done!

Next week's Praise Assembly  - we will focus upon those children who have improved on their spelling scores over the last few weeks.

All the children who brought in the Victorian photo with their ideas were also praised for the extra Home Learning they took part in. This has really helped starting off the Year 2 Victorian topic.

Y2 Spellings 13th January 2017 to learn for 20th January 2017

This week the spellings are all common exception words and are as follows:
Red Group: could, would, should, who, whole, any, many
Orange and Yellow Groups: our, house, full, pull, push, put
Green Group: said, the, was, you
Many of the children will have come across these words before and be very confident in reading them.  They may also think that they are easy to spell, but they do need to retain these, so over learning them will be a good strategy!

Y2 - Literacy Learning week beginning 9th January 2017

This week the children started by giving their Christmas holiday presentations.  All of the children spoke in front of their group and it was great to hear what they had been up to over the Christmas holidays.  We managed to video all of them and some of the children enjoyed watching themselves back to evaluate how they had got on.  For the rest of the week we have been writing information texts about the Victorians.  We have been using our knowledge of Victorians from our trip to The Priest House Museum as well as what we have found out this term so far about Victorian children and toys to write lists and descriptions.  Next week the children will be using their written presentation skills to produce their own books - All about the Victorians - in which they will have written several information texts about what they have discovered about Victorian Britain.

Y2 - Maths Learning week beginning 9th January 2017

This week we have started a new unit of work on Multiplication.  We have been specifically been looking at the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and what the multiplication sign means.  Many of the children have been confidently counting in 2's, 5's and 10's for some time, but now they need to start memorising some times table facts and understanding that multiplication means "lots of" or "groups of".  How about arranging some objects at home in groups of 2 or 5 and seeing if your child can work out how many there are quickly?  The aim is to get them to recognise that there are quicker and more efficient ways of calculating than counting in ones and adding many multiples such as 5+5+5+5+5+5+5=  .  If you can double or count in 5s or 10s
to work it out it is much quicker!

Y2 Home Learning - 5th January 2017

This week we will be continuing our Victorians topic.  I have sent home a photograph for the children to look at as "history detectives".  There are three questions for the children to consider, please find some time to talk about the photograph and answer the three questions with your child.  They should be encouraged to write their own answers, but please scribe if they are finding this difficult.  You may even like to link the photo to any family history that you know of.
Please bring back by next Friday for a superhero point and a home learning certificate.

Y2 - Parents' information session - 5th January 2017

Please come along to find out more about the spring term in year 2 and ask any questions you may have on Wednesday 11th January 2017 in the school hall from 9am.

Paper and Card Recycling Assembly

Paper and Card Recycling Assembly
In our school assembly today I talked to the children about the importance of us trying to recycle things, with a particular reference to recycling paper and card.
We talked about how paper is made from trees and then looked at a series of photographs that show what happens to "waste" paper when it is recycled and sent to a Recycling Plant to be made into "new" paper.

I encouraged the children to try to bring in any unwanted Christmas Cards and put them into our Recycling box. We are trying to collect as many as possible and keep a tally of exactly how many we manage to get. It would be very useful if your cards could be tied with an elastic band and the total number written on the front to save us from having to count them individually.

Many Thanks,
Duncan MacBean

Y2 - Christmas Reading Challenge Update - 3rd January 2017

Well done to those children who have shown us that they have been enjoying their reading over the holidays.  Many of the children who have taken part in the Christmas reading challenge are showing real enthusiasm for their reading:
Well done to... Matilda, Harry N, Isabelle, Sophie, Jasmine and Lilyrose.
Certificates will be winging their way home soon and more names will be published when I read with their groups.

Y2 - Christmas Presentations - 3rd January 2017 - Please note change of day for presentations.

This week the children are planning presentations about their Christmas holidays.  Today we have talked about what we watched, ate, received, gave and visited.  Tomorrow the children will be planning and making a poster that they will use to help them present their holiday news and on Monday they will be giving their presentations to small groups.  If your child would like to bring in a photograph, small item or reminder of their Christmas holidays to show, then please send them in with it on Monday.

Y2 - Happy New Year - 3rd January 2017

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all.  We hope you've had a lovely break and look forward to getting stuck in to our learning this term!
