Healthy Help Needed!

http://www.bromleyhealthcare.org.uk/__images/campaigns/campaign-banner-dummy.jpg

Hi there again!

As you will have seen from the blog on the home page, the week after next (commencing Monday 8th July) is Healthy Week. I just wondered, on the off chance, if there was any of you who worked in the medical or health profession that might be able to come in to Year 2 and do a short presentation about their job - the children would love to ask questions or get hands on............stethoscopes - talking about the body, CPR, Exercise, Healthy eating - we will do a lot of things in school but it's always more exciting if a visitor comes in (especially if they know them!)

If you think you could help in some way, please let me know!

Thank you!

Mrs. Johnson.

Getting lost in a book!

 http://www.schooljotter.com/imagefolders/littlemead/Extreme_reading/Suzanne-reading_1.JPG

I think it's safe to say that every child in year 2 LOVES reading!!!!!!!!!!

What an enjoyable week - one child said it had gone so quickly!

Oh! And I nearly forgot that on Monday we had our trip to Street Wise where the children demonstrated how clever they were and even practiced making 999 calls! Impressive stuff - a note though - It would be a good idea to reinforce with your children the importance of saying "no" if they are asked to do something they know is dangerous or if a stranger asks them to go off with them!

We based our reading week activities around the book "Trubloff" by John Burningham. It inspired us to explore our hopes and dreams, Trubloff's big day on the stage and, indeed, our big day on the Year 2's Got Talent stage. This entailed lots of drama (which the children were excellent at), collaborative learning projects producing a diorama of a scene from the book and one working with Year1 making story boxes. We also learned some super, top secret ways of helping us to write...........we wrote Trubloff's diary. Next week we will be using this learning to help us write our own "Big Day" diaries.

A huge thank you to all the families that were able to make it in to share a book with the children - the children thoroughly enjoyed it, you made it a very special time for your child and, in some cases, some of the other children too!!!!! There are some lovely photos on display in the entrance foyer - please take a look!

You will also see all the extreme reading photos that were taken - super imaginative!!!!! Well done!!!

There was no end to our reading skills and talents as we also read 2 french stories (Thank you to the Tindalls) - Me, using my rusty french and the children listening out for familiar sounding words and inferring from the pictures - very enjoyable - they have a good ear for languages! Tres Bien!

Next week we will also be learning about time in numeracy so if you would like to practice at home that would be great!

Thanks again and happy reading!

Reading Week invitation

Last week the children worked hard to complete our extended writing task, producing an information leaflet for the Dorchester Museum all about Mary Anning and the Jurassic Coast. This week we learned all about Pangaea, continental shift leading to how fossils are formed and the relationship of all this to the Jurassic Coast - ask the children to explain to you about the earth and it's plates using a hard boiled egg!!!!! Ofcourse our trip to the Museum reinforced our learning and the children impressed Pippa, the Museum Tutor, with all their knowledge! Well done everyone - you also conducted yourselves superbly!

As I am sure you are aware, this week is Reading Week- the whole school is basing it around the same text "Trubloff" by John Burningham - Mr. Farrington has set a challenge too - can you take a photograph of the strangest place you have been caught reading!

I would like to invite you all in on Wednesday afternoon from 3 o'clock to come and share a book with your child - weather permitting it would be lovely if we can spread outside to stretch out and enjoy! It is entirely up to you if you would like to bring a special book in from home or merely use books in school - feel free to bring in cushions, snuggly blankets, torches (incase you want to make a "reading den") anything you like to make it an enjoyable, fun, memorable experience and quality time together!

POWSA Social

Hi there guys,
Just to let you know that the next POWSA meeting is being held on the 9th July at 19:45 at the new Wagamama restaurant in Brewery square. New faces are always welcome.  We are a small group of committed parents and teachers who enjoy raising money for our school and children, and without all your help and support this just wouldn't happen.  However, our core group is getting smaller and smaller and as a consequence recent events have been much harder to organise and run.  Therefore we would ask you to seriously consider coming along to the next meeting, ask your questions, find out what its all about and see if becoming a POWSA member is something you would like to do.  There is no expectation on your time, we wont sign you up to do anything, we just ask you come along, meet us and enjoy a nice meal.  If you do fancy coming would you be kind enough to let a POWSA member know, or leave your name with the school office, just so we can ensure a big enough table.
Hope to see there!

Musical Soiree

Musical Soiree

This is a short reminder of our Musical Soiree taking place on Tuesday

25th June at 6.00pm at the Dorchester Middle School.

We moved the venue as we have exceeded our school’s capacity! Please also

recall that the performance is not suitable for small children to attend.

Finally, I am assuming that all children are taking part unless you have

informed the office or me?!  If your child would like to be involved and has lessons outside of school then please also see me!
As this is the sole concert of the year

expectations are that all children learning music at the school would

endeavour to be there. Thank you! Mrs Mewett

Mr F has been checking us out!

Mr F has been so impressed with Year 2's Home Learning this term! What is particularly pleasing is the way that each of you is learning in your preferred way: making models, writing poems, painting pictures.....this is great! Please keep it up and if you haven't got the Home Learning habit..it's never too late to start!

"Lo amo la pizza!"

Amazing home learning everyone!!!!!! I have really enjoyed seeing all the different inspired pieces from stories and poems to paintings and models - superb!!!!!!! This is besides all the actual fossils of various sizes!!!!! Thank you so much to all the children and their amazing creativity, and to your families who have supported you to create whatever you were inspired to do!

Today, half the class had the fantastic opportunity of going to Pizza Express to make pizzas and to learn all about healthy eating - it really was a brilliant morning where the children learned lots, demonstrated their extensive knowledge were totally responsible for making their own pizza from start to finish - even spinning their pizza dough! They were a credit to the class and the school - well done! I look forward to taking the second group tomorrow - Don't forget to practice your Italian for
"thank you - grazie" and "mmmmmm delicious - delizioso"!!!!! Look out for photos at our assembly!

An enthusiastic request from the children for anymore parents or family members who would like to come and read the class a short story - they absolutely love it!!!! Thanks to Maisie's mum who came in just before the half term!

A reminder that our assembly is this Friday, we look forward to seeing you then - 9:20 in the hall.

Next Tuesday is our trip to the Museum, so if anyone would like to join us, that would be great - it is for the morning but we may stop off for a picnic with our packed lunches on the way back weather permitting!

Time Lord Detectives - Important Mission

http://images.fineartamerica.com/images-small/space-fossil-shelley-myers.jpg

We  launched into our last half a term with enthusiasm and a hard working attitude today! We began by stepping into my tardis and becoming timelord detectives - we journeyed back over 200 years to meet Mary Anning who told us all about her life........an amazing lady. Having zoomed back to the classroom in our tardis, we discussed our mission - to produce information about Mary Anning, fossils and the Jurassic Coast for the Dorchester County Museum, as they need help improving their exhibition!!!!! How are we going to do it? What information do we need, how will we present it, what do we need to do? A very good website we discovered has been added to pupil links - humanities!!!! Feel free to explore it at home! Watch this space for updated progress...........

Music was very exciting today, we explored duration using instruments and composing short pieces combining rhythm and a range of duration - brilliant!

This afternoon we began learning about the Jurassic Coast, sedimentary rock and how fossils are formed.........we even created our own sedimentary rock in pastel!

You will gradually see an abundance of amazing, colourful cross curricular art work appear in the classroom over the next few weeks! Keep your eyes peeled!

We have lots of exciting things planned............I have had some super home learning in so far and can't wait to see the rest!

A reminder that our class assembly has moved to Friday 14th June, we look forward to seeing you then.

Well done to a fantastic first day back..................
