AGTECH with Mr Spracklen

Today in Y2 Computing we looked at AGTECH (Agricultural Technology) with Mr Spracklen -

We learnt how Farmer Hazel uses a drone on Maiden Castle Farm and also considered these 'KEY TERMS' when thinking about technology on the farm -

(Hazel spoke about this one in assembly as well)

We all had a go at flying Hazel's drone. It was very exciting!

Week 3 in Year 2

Hello everyone! Wow, what another great week we have had in Year 2. We have been incredibly busy and have had lots of fun with our learning.

In Maths we have continued to look at numbers to 100. This week we were looking at estimating numbers on a number line and comparing numbers using base ten equipment. In English we looked at sentence writing and how a sentence should be structured. In Science we continued to focus on plants. We discussed what plants need to stay healthy and the life cycle of a plant.

This week during our RE lesson we were lucky enough to be visited by Sherene to talk about her religion (Islam). We learnt so much about what following this religion entails and we had a specific focus on prayer. Thank you for this Sherene, the children really enjoyed this.

Next week it's the start of food, faith and farming fortnight - as always, expect the unexpected!

Children came home with their online log ins today. If you have any questions about this, please let me know.

Have a great weekend!

Coding: Timed Sequences

In Computing today we learnt that algorithms follow a sequence.

Mr Spracklen set us the challenge to design an algorithm that follows a timed sequence.

This 'Magician' task is now available for us to work through again at home via PurpleMash.

Week 2 in Year 2

Hello everyone, we hope you have a wonderful weekend.

We have had a super busy week in Year 2 filled with lots of learning, fun and laughter!

This week in Maths we have continued to look at numbers to 100. We have used a place value grid and different manipulatives to represent numbers. We have also looked at how we can partition numbers to 100 using a part whole model. In English we continued to look at instructions and even made lemonade following instructions. In Science we have continued to look at plants. We started an investigation today about what plants need to grow and be healthy. We will be looking at the seeds we planted weekly.

Thank you to all who came to the parent information session on Monday. If you have any further questions, please email me.

Your child should have come home with home learning today and spellings (dependent on RWI group). RWI did not happen today as usual due to school photos, meaning that some children may have not come home with a RWI book bag book. Children will come home with one on Monday if they did not today. We also visited the library this afternoon and children should have come home with library books.

If you have any questions or queries please send me an email.

See you on Monday!

Unit 2.1 - Coding - Lesson 2

Today in Computing we explored how in 2Code we can use the 'collision detection' event to program the computer to detect a collision.

We all enjoyed completing the 'Princess and Frog' challenge on 2Code -

This challenge can be accessed from home by visiting -

First week in Year 2!

WOW! What an amazing first week we have had in Year 2! Your children are truly incredible and have settled in so well. We are so proud of them!

This week we have explored, learnt, played and had fun. In Maths we have started to look at numbers to 100 and how 2 digit numbers are made from tens and ones. In English we looked at nouns and started to write sentences using these. In Science we have started our topic of plants. We have also started to explore cursive handwriting.

All children should have come home with a new reading record and home learning. Although this is not compulsory, we encourage all children to do their home learning and to bring it in as it links to what we are learning in the classroom. We ask that reading records and home learning and brought back into school on a Friday. Any questions about this, please let me know.

A few updates about next week:
- The Year 2 parent information session is on Monday at 9am in the hall.
- Some children still do not have their PE kits in school, please ensure they come in next week.

Please email me if you have any questions or queries.

Have a lovely weekend!

Unit 2.1 - Coding - Lesson 1

We learnt today that in computing, a set of instructions is called an 'ALGORITHM'. It would be great to know who can remember this word at home tonight?

With our new knowledge, Mr Spracklen put us in charge of a VIRTUAL AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER on Purple Mash. It was very exciting! We had to use algorithms to control the planes and helicopters.
