Home Learning for Year 2 – 27/05/16

Home Learning for Year 2 – 27/05/16
On Friday 10th June the school and preschool will be holding a birthday celebratory tea party for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
We would like Year 2 to find out about the queen and her reign. They could possibly then write up some facts, or make a poster, or use ICT to creatively present some facts or make some art work…. Be creative!
It would be great to have this work back on Monday 6th June  so we can use it through the week leading up to the party and to support learning.

An invitation - 22nd May 2016

Greetings to you, the lucky Parents of children in year 2,
We will be having a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Drama / Science and Technology chocolate inventing day on Wednesday 8th June.  Tremendous things are in store for the children!  They are invited to come to school dressed as a character from the story.  They will be taking part in drama, science and technology themed sessions to celebrate our learning over the last few weeks.  Not only will the child be inventing new and amazing confections, but there will also be time for tasting too!  In order to do this we will need some help with ingredients, please sign up on the list in the classroom to indicate what you are able to bring.  Please send the food in with the children on Wednesday the 8th.  One more thing – be certain your child has this ticket with them, otherwise they will not be admitted!
Warm Regards
The Year 2 Team

Maths Learning - Week Beginning 16th May

This week the children have been revising their 3D shape names, measuring weight in grams and length in cm.  They have also been looking at lines of symmetry and telling the time.  The class has shown great independence in their work, remembering what they needed to do and choosing equipment to help them to solve problems.  At home practice naming shapes, weighing when cooking and measuring items around the home.  Also keep up the time telling, especially o'clocks, half past, quarter to and quarter past.

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 16th May

This week the children have been looking at play scripts.  They have used the characters from our class book - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to role play and then write down in play script form.  At home why not help your child have a conversation between two of their toys.  If they can write some of it down, even better!

Beach safety assembly - Thursday 12th May

We welcomed the RNLI into school on Thursday 12th May. Ben and Maria came into school to explain to the school about how they can be safe on the beach and in the sea.
The children learned that the red and yellow flag is the flag which lets us know it is safe to go into the water. They also learned about other flags which mean danger possibly for different reasons.
A member of the class got to dress up as a real life guard too!
The children brought home leaflets on Friday from the RNLI. Do have a look with your child at the key messages, they were all very interested!

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Drama Day - 8th June 2016

We hope to conclude our current English topic on Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by half term.  To celebrate the ending of this topic we would like to organise a drama day where the children will be invited by Mr Wonka himself to come to school dressed as a character from the book (we thought we would let you know plenty of time in advance).  Golden Tickets will be winging their way home soon, and we are hoping that if our marble jar is full by then we might also be able to end the afternoon with a bit of chocolate party - with healthy things to dip into it of course!  We have provisionally booked Wednesday 8th June (The first Wednesday back after the half-term holidays) to have our last bit of fun with Charlie!  We will blog again in the coming week's with some more ideas for costume and with a party food list.

Health and Safety week - 8th May 2016

This week we will be focusing on how to stay safe and be healthy.  Each day this week we will be looking at a different aspect of this theme.  On Monday we will be concentrating on Road Safety and raising the children's awareness of roads, traffic, crossing roads and how we can use them safely.  On Tuesday we will be focusing on maintaining a healthy mind and attitude.  Wednesday will be our e-safety day and Thursday we will be concentrating on Beach Safety.  We are looking forward to visiting the Life Education Van on Tuesday afternoon, the children always love this and learn so much!

Saturday 7 May 2016

Health and safety week 9th - 13th May

The children will be exploring aspects of staying safe and being healthy over the next week in class. We will be welcoming visitors to the school; RNLI will be visiting to run a Beach safety assembly with tips and key messages about being safe. We also are welcoming the Safer School Team who will be running sessions with each class about staying safe when online at age appropriate level. We also have the Life Education van in school on Tues and Weds (10th and 11th) and each class will access a session based upon the PSHE curriculum for their class. In class, the children will be talking about road safety as well as being healthy and linking this to their science topics.

Lastly, on Friday 20th May each class will be accessing children appropriate levels of first aid training kindly offered by St John's ambulance. Yr 4 will be running through the programme and hopefully completing the course for a certificate!

If you do have questions or some skills or time to offer do speak with the year team.

Thank you, Mrs Mewett

Jigsaw Parent's Information Session - 5th May 2016

-->
As part of our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health education) we follow a programme called JIGSAW. The sessions from September build upon children’s emotional literacy, self-esteem and knowledge of who they are, how they relate to one another and the world in a positive and healthy way. You may have heard of the class’s JIGSAW friend? The summer term units are about ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing me’. Within the ‘Changing me’ puzzle in every year group there are two or three lessons which help children understand the changes that occur to our bodies.
We invite you to attend a session on Tuesday 24th May in the school hall. in which we will give you more of an insight into what your child will be learning about and discussing at age appropriate levels.
We hope you are in agreement that materials of Jigsaw are important for children’s development. If you do have concerns please do talk with the class teacher at a convenient time.

Home Learning - 5th May 2016

Year 2 Home Learning – 6th May 2016
The Big Write III
This week we would like to set the scene for out third big write in year 2.  On Wednesday afternoon we would like to light our candles, put on our relaxing music and get carried away with our writing.  This time the children have been planning how to use a well known story and take it just a little bit further.
Our story is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it turns out that Mr Willy Wonka didn’t just hide five golden tickets but six!
I have asked the children to create a character that would find the sixth golden ticket, they have drawn them, written words to describe them as well as thought about where their character would find their ticket.  The children have also started to plan the story that I would like them to write about their character.
Over the weekend I would like you to take time to discuss your child’s ideas for the story, especially about how they can describe different parts of their story.  Try to draw out the details that the children could then use in their writing.  We are looking for amazing adjectives!  Please fill in the sheet on the back of this sheet with describing words (adjectives) that the children have come up with and return to school by Wednesday 11th May.
Choose words to describe the following:
Your character’s feelings:

Your character’s looks:
Where your character lives:

The place your character finds his ticket:

Outside Mr Wonka’s factory:

Inside Mr Wonka’s Factory:

Chocolate and Sweets that they see:

Any others…

Literacy Learning - Week beginning 3rd May 2016

This week we have been reading more of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  The children have been looking at how Roald Dahl describes his characters, inventing their own character and planning their own stories.  Look out for the home learning this weekend in preparation for our Big Write next Wednesday afternoon.

Maths Learning - Week Beginning 3rd May

This week we have been revising our multiplication and division facts, we have particularly looked at how we can show and deepen our understanding of problem solving through drawing pictures to explain and demonstrate our maths.  For example for 3x5=15.  You could draw 5 plates with 3 apples on each plate or 3 pencil pots with 5 pencils in each.  Have a go at home, draw a picture of a multiplication or division fact.
