Year 2 - The last day is upon us! - 25th July 2018

I can't quite believe it, but here we are at the end of an enormously exciting and fun packed year!  We have had so many highlights and so much going on it is impossible to write them down here so I have put together a DVD for you to take home and watch instead.  (I'll give these out tomorrow).
So instead of looking back, let's celebrate the successes and launch ourselves into the next challenge!  Well done to each and every one of the class, you have truly grown and flourished in year 2 and have been a pleasure to teach.  You are an extremely friendly, caring and considerate group - Mrs Thorpe and Mrs Bishop are really lucky to be having you next year.  Have a fantastic and restful break, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you in September for more new adventures!
Best Wishes
The Year 2 Team

Year 2 - Home Learning - 15th July 2018

In the run up to the Summer and in light of the efforts put in during Global Awareness fortnight I have not set any home learning.  However for one last challenge we are going to have a summer reading blast!  In class we will be reading the end of our class text Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we have had an assembly about the Library Services Summer Reading Challenge and our new school library is starting to be used.  So to get us ready for a summer of reading I challenge you to...
If you complete 5 in a row before the end of term, come and see Miss Johnson for your Superhero reward.

Year 2 - Chilled in Charmouth - 15th July 2018

What a wonderful trip we had in Charmouth on Friday!  The children were immediately at home looking for grey stone, beef rocks, star shaped Crinoids, fools-gold Ammonites and broken Belemnites.  Super knowledge of fossil formation, I think the leaders at the centre were very impressed with how much the children already knew!  Well done year 2 for being so interested and involved in your learning and coming back with your pockets (and hats) full of fossils and your brains full of knowledge!  It was a pleasure to take you all out for the day and many thanks to all of the adults that came along to support.

Year 2 - What a week! - 12th July 2018

What a week full of learning, fun and smiles!
Firstly our class assembly was brilliant and the costumes were truly inspired.  We enjoyed the rest of our day making chocolates, acting out the story, making our own factory from construction and making our own board game of the story.  Needless to say the chocolates we made didn't last long!  A chocolate fountain gave us a splash of chocolatey fun with the children getting more chocolate on their faces than in their mouths!
On Monday we went to Thomas Hardye school to see visiting author Paul Stickland, he told us all about writing his books and the illustrations of Dinosaurs he has created.  The children listened beautifully and even got to join in by drawing their own dinosaurs.  I think Mr Stickland was very impressed.
On Wednesday we went to see what year 4 got up to for their swimming lessons.  They were taking part in their annual swimming gala and we got to cheer them on.  We also marched back to school wearing our red and white outfits in support of England!
Tomorrow we are off to the beach, so don't forget:
2 bottles of water
A snack
A small backpack
School top
Shorts or light weight trousers or a skirt
Sensible footwear for walking on a stony beach
A hat
Suncream (make sure they have some on in the morning)
Lunch if you do not normally have hot dinners.
We hope to find some fossils to bring back and take home!

Year 2 - Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 2nd July

This week we have adapted our acrostic poems to include characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  We have improved our work and used purple pens to make it even better.  Towards the end of the week and during Wonka day we have been making a board game.  Next week we will be writing instructions for the game as our final Big Write.  Have a look at games instructions at home.  What do the children notice?

Year 2 - Next Week - 5th July 2018

Next week is shaping up to be a very busy week!  Firstly we have been invited, as part of the DASP Literacy Festival, to visit Thomas Hardye School for an author visit.  Paul Stickland will be talking to the children and explaining what inspires him to write.  For this event we will leave school after lunch and be back in time for the usual end to the day.  Also DASP would like to take photos at this event and so need your permission.  The children will be bringing home a permission slip tomorrow, please sign and send back with your child on Monday morning.
On Wednesday morning (11th July), we have been invited to watch year 4's swimming gala.  This will provide the children in year 2 to get an idea of what happens when they go swimming next year, whilst giving them the opportunity to cheer on the older children.
Next week we will be having our last Big Write of the year.  This will involve children writing instructions for a board game that we have been making.  Over the weekend why not play a board game and look at how the instructions are written?
We will also be starting our Jurassic Coast topic and visiting Charmouth Heritage Centre on Friday, please make sure you have returned your permission slip to the office.  More details to follow!

Year 2 - Wonka Day - 5th July for 6th July 2018

Just to confirm, the children can wear their costumes all day tomorrow unless you feel they might be uncomfortable due to the heat, they needn't bring any other clothes to change into.  Looking forward to see who turns up at the factory tomorrow.  Don't forget your ticket!

Year 2 - Wonka day and assembly - 4th July for the 6th July

A reminder to get your Golden Tickets at the ready!  This Friday we will be having our Wonka Day!  It is also our class assembly as well.  Please bring the children to school wearing their costumes, the assembly will be from 9:20 and afterwards we will be taking part in some drama and DT activities.  During the afternoon we will be having a Wonka party and at the end of the day look our for the pop-up shop.
I wonder where our Imagination might take us?
