Year Two - Dress-up for World Maths Day moves to Wednesday

Dear Year Two Families,

Because our Thorncombe Woods/Stinsford Church visit on Friday clashes with 'Dressing Up for World Maths Day", we would like to suggest that any children who are particularly keen to dress up for a whole school day in 'Maths-related-costume' do so on Wednesday 2nd Feb' instead.

The children would of course be welcome to dress up mathematically on the Friday too for half a day, - or indeed to wear their costume on the trip to wood if the costume is not too encumbering.

Warm regards,    - Mr. M

Homophones

Homophones - words that sound the same but have a different spelling and meaning.

Can you find some pairs (or groups) of homophones?

Bear  Bare

Eye     I

You    Ewe    Yew

Coats of Arms

As you know we have been finding out about famous Hardys of Dorset. Here is the Thomas Hardye School badge.

It is a ‘coat of arms’ for the family ‘Hardye”.

What can you find out about ‘coats of arms’? Does your family name have a ‘coat of arms’?

If you had to create a new ‘coat of arms’ for your family, what symbols would you include?

I would include a cricket bat and a guitar in mine. As it is though, it looks like this.

Year Two - Friday Book Change

The children in Year Two have all had the opportunity to change their books in the Library today.
Friday afternoon is our 'timetables slot' for doing this.

BLOWN AWAY by SPREADSHEETS

Mr Spracklen was blown away with Year 2's spreadsheet skills in today's Computing lesson.

Our aim today was to explore the capabilities of a spreadsheet in adding up coins to match the prices of objects.

Together, we worked through the following activity -

This is tricky work but Year Two are smashing it with great resilience and determination.

Mr Spracklen awarded the class a whole-class butterfly point for their efforts today.

Well done Year Two - we are VERY PROUD of each and every single one of you.

Year Two Science - Waterproof or not?

Today in Year Two we have been testing materials to find out if they are waterproof.

Year Two Home Learning - Friday 21st- 28th January

Task:    See Activity sheet in Yellow Books

1. Following a visit from students at Thomas Hardye School, the children have been asked to design an alternative cover for one of their favourite books.

Imagine that you were the illustrator of the book, what picture would you think best suited the cover of the book? What should the writing look like?

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Can you have a think and a chat in preparation for next week’s writing activity? :

We will be considering the reasons for and the reasons against having a school uniform.

The learning objectives will be –

-To develop the idea of considering 2 opposing points of view.

-To write a balanced argument which explores different opinions.

Perhaps you could have a chat and ‘a think’ about this so that you can share your ideas with your schoolmates next week.

There are 5 dinosaurs in the forest. Each of them has 4 legs. How many legs are there altogether?

If a Tyrannosaurus Rex ate 2 dinosaurs each week, how many would he eat in 5 weeks?

Scientists found 3 caves with dinosaur bones in. Each cave had 15 bones in it.

How many bones were there altogether?

If a Diplodocus ate 5 trees a day, how many would he eat in one week?

10 children go to the Natural History Museum. Each child buys a pack of 10 pencils in the shop.

How many pencils do they buy altogether?

Response to a “story introduction”

Can you write the next part of the story, following on from this introduction?

I was feeling very odd when I woke up this morning. I was strangely hot and felt as if I wanted to scratch myself. When my alarm clock went off it actually scared me, and I leapt out of bed. I landed lightly on my feet.

When I looked into my bedroom mirror I couldn’t believe what I saw.

Could this be possible?

I had turned into a chimpanzee!!!

Lesson Two - Copying, Cutting, Pasting and Totals (Spreadsheets)

Today in Computing with Mr Spracklen we continued our unit of work on spreadsheets.

The aim of our lesson today was to -

- To use copying, cutting and pasting shortcuts in 2Calculate (Purple Mash).
- To use 2Calculate (Purple Mash) totalling tools.
- To use 2Calculate (Purple Mash) to solve a simple puzzle.

Mr Spracklen set us the task to copy this spreadsheet -

Our challenge was to change the number to get the total '15' in EVERY yellow AND orange box.

Congratulations Mia and Tyler for being the first pair to complete Mr Spracklen's challenge -

Of course, there was one simple solution to Mr Spracklen's challenge that none of the Y2's spotted...

Year 2 Home Learning Friday 7th January - The Nelson Quiz

RESEARCH CHALLENGE

Find the answer to as many of these questions as you can.

If you get stuck on a question, don’t worry, just leave it and go on to the next one. You don’t have to do them in the order that I’ve written them.

Parents - We have learned a bit about Nelson already, so some of these questions should be familiar.

What was Nelson’s father’s job?

How old was Nelson when he first joined the navy?

What two significant injuries did Nelson get when fighting at sea?

How did Nelson famously ignore an order to retreat from battle?

In what year was the Battle of Trafalgar?

How did Nelson send the famous message: “England expects every man will do his duty”?

How was Nelson killed?

Who was with Nelson when he died?

How did they preserve Nelson’s dead body so that they could bring it back to England?

Where is Nelson buried?

Where is the HMS Victory now?

Lesson One - Reviewing the Use of Spreadsheets

In Computing with Mr Spracklen today we started our exploration into the world of spreadsheets! Mr Spracklen began by sharing his (slightly worrying) love of all things spreadsheets!

We were particularly impressed with Mr Spracklen's 'CONDITIONAL FORMATTING' - lots of pretty colours!

The aim of today's session was -

- To review the work done in 2Calculate in Year 1.

- To revise spreadsheet related vocabulary.

- To use some 2Calculate tools that were introduced in Year 1.

All children were set the challenge of displaying '333' in Mr Spracklen's Counting Machine (set as a 'ToDo' on Purple Mash). Most children were able to do this fairly easily...

Mr Spracklen then set everyone the challenge to display '457', Dylan was the only child who managed to do this in the time available today (it was a tricky challenge).

Mr Spracklen is looking forward to more #InspiredToLearn spreadsheet challenges next week!
