Year 2 - Mathletics and More - 13th September 2017

Dear Parents

Very exciting news… your child continues to have home and school access to Mathletics!  Mathletics is an online maths learning site that allows children to practice their Maths skill and learn new concepts through games and tutorials.  They can also play games against school children from our school and other countries in the world developing speed and accuracy in Mental Arithmetic.
As teachers we can monitor all of the children’s progress and help them to access the levels the teaching programmes that are appropriate for their ability.  We will be using it in school as part of their Maths Learning.
Your child has login details, a username and a password on a card so they can go online, sign in and play at home.
The children have already had a couple of sessions using it in school and have set up their account so that they are familiar with the website.

How to access Mathletics
1.  Go the website www.mathletics.com
2.  Click on the tab called sign in
3.  They will then be prompted to type in their username and password.
4.  Once they are logged in, they can access the games and tutorials.
5.  There are options when they access the activities to click on buttons to make it easier or harder.

With Mathletics comes a free parent account where you can find out about your child’s progress.

How to access your free parent account:
2.  Enter your details along with your child’s username and password.  You will be emailed your own username and password for the mathletics site.
3. To access the parent console, simply go to the Mathletics website and use your parent username and password to sign in.

If you have any questions regarding Mathletics then please do come and ask.

You will find your child's log in details for Mathletics and other online learning tools in their reading records very shortly

Y2 - Resilient Tortoises - 8th September 2017

Today year 2 have been using their powers of resilience to tackle challenges that require persistence, focus and an ability to manage distractions.  The children have worked hard to identify what they need to focus on in order to build their own learning powers.  The children have stacked dominoes and bricks, written alphabets in their neatest handwriting, solved maths problems, riddles and even found the right path across the swamp!  Well done year 2, remember to be resilient with all learning challenges.

Year 2 - School Meals - 8th September 2017

The system for ordering your child's meals has now changed, all year 2 children are entitled to a free school meal under the government funded scheme, however you need to log on to local food links to order the meal for your child.  There is a letter going home tonight with your child's code in order to do this.  If you have not yet logged on and chosen meal choices for your child and need help in doing so, please come and ask at the school office.  Thank you if you have already done so.

Year 2 - Spellings - 8th September 2017

In year 2 we will be giving the children spellings to learn each Friday.  The children will be expected to learn these for the following Friday where they will have a spelling check.  There are lots of ways to learn spellings, you could: sound them out loud, write them on post its, use magnetic letters, play hangman or you could use the sheet provided to look at each word, cover it and then write it down and check to see if it is right.
Each week the children will be rewarded both for their effort in learning spellings and for how they do in the spell check.  So, when your child learns their spellings at home please either write it in their reading journal or return the spelling sheet completed and they will be given a Superhero point.
The spellings for this week are as follows:
Red spelling groups: Looking at the ay sound, augh in laugh, silent b and adding ed.
play, played, laugh, laughed, climb, climbed
Orange spelling groups:  Looking at the ay sound, the ou sound and a_e words
sparay, delay, cloud, sound, snake, game
Yellow Spelling groups: Looking at the ay sound, the ou sound and a_e words
play, tray, found, round, make, game
Green Spelling groups: Looking at the ay sound
play, tray, stay

As this is the first week of spellings you may find that the spellings are too easy or too hard for your child.  Please bare with us as we adjust them to the right level.  If it is too easy then treat them as a bit of revision, if they are too hard then just attempt some of the words or recall some of the letter names within the words.

Y2 - Resourceful Spiders - 7th September 2017

Today the children have been learning about resourcefulness and our resourceful spider has been giving us a helping hand.  We have asked questions, made links and used our imaginations to build our learning powers.  This afternoon the children have really impressed us as they worked collaboratively to make their own resourceful spiders.  Each child had a role within their groups which they took on with real enthusiasm.  Well done year 2, another three marbles in the jar!

Y2 - A great start - 6th September 2017

What a wonderful first day.  We were extremely impressed at how well year 2 settled into their first day.  We have been refreshing our understanding of being reflective monkeys today, thinking about ourselves, what we do well and what we would like to improve.  A display of the children's work will be going up in the classroom very soon.  The children will have also brought home their new reading records and a group reading book which they will be reading at home and school in the next week.  We will be changing library books very soon so that the children have lots of new books to get stuck into!  All of the children are already zooming up that Superhero wall, we are looking forward to a very successful year!
