Mike Brownlow visit and travelling back in time!

Well we had a fantastic day yesterday! Mike Brownlow who is an author and illustrator came in to school and read to us the stories

It was a brilliant experience that all of the children really enjoyed. We all got to make up our own pirates and he gave us a drawing lesson on how to draw pirates. 

This morning we worked collaboratively with preschool. Half of year 2 went over to preschool and the other half stayed in our classroom. It was a great morning, we shared the book

After we read the book the children then retold it using puppets. We then had a taste of some of the fruit that is in the story and drew some of the animals in the story. 

Year 2 have also travelled back in time today! (Very busy Wednesday) We needed to find out some more information about the Crimean war and so decided to go to Scutari hospital. Once we crawled through the tunnel and in to the hospital ward we had a visit from Florence Nightingale. Florence told us all about what she did in the hospital when she turned up and why she is a well known figure. When our visitor left the children then got in to groups and had work together to act out a freeze frame. We had many wounded soldiers and nurses.

An exciting day tomorrow - as it is part of our reading week, we have arranged for a children's author/illustrator to come in and inspire the children about creating stories! He will be giving an exciting presentation/workshop to each class in the morning and then setting activities for them in the afternoon! The author and illustrator is, Mike Brownlow, author of Ten Little Pirates and creator of the TV series Little Robots.

I want my hat back!

This morning in year 2 we have been looking at the story

The children worked in pairs to add the narrative to the text. We watched the animation that was made on the story, the children really enjoyed this. 

We are encouraging the children to read a range of books this week. In group reading this week the children will be looking at poetry texts and making gingerbread men to go with the story.

The children can also make up their own stories using characters from well known stories.

This is a favourite of mine and one that they children can get involved in as they were rhyming.

Reading week begins!

 

We are now heading in to our reading week. In Year 2 the children will be learning lots about reading, narration and what makes a good story. They will have a chance to make up their own stories and also do some book reviews.

This week we will be encouraging the children to bring in their own favourite stories, we will be sharing these from Tuesday onwards.

Sport relief and the bake off!

Year 2 looked fantastic today! Well done to everyone that dressed up in their 'silly' costumes. We all took part in the sport relief mile this morning and everyone got a sticker.

The Prince of Wales 'Bake off' was fantastic. The school council reps voted for their favourite in each year and the overall favourite. So well done to Miss Hancock in year 2 for winning the votes in our class and a huge well done to Mrs Brooker in Year 1 for winning the overall vote! They all looked scrumptious. Also a massive well done to Mrs Hibberd for arranging it all.

Next week we have reading week. Just a few reminders about next week:
-Farm trip is unfortunately cancelled due to the road works (this will be rearranged).
-Children can bring in their favourite books (we will be sharing these on weds and thurs).
-Tuesday we have an author coming in to work with all the children in the school.
-On Wednesday the Victorian home learning is due back in.
-No spellings have been set this week. Although the children will have a test on Friday with some of the previous spellings that they have had.

Reading week...

Next week the whole school are having a reading week. We have some very special activities that we will be taking part in.

As part of this week we thought it would be nice for the children to share their favourite story book with their friends. A book that the children really enjoy reading themselves, so not a magazine or a fiction book.

What we have been learning about...

Today the children listened to the story of Lotte the miner. This was a moving story which told the story of a child that was taken from a workhouse and then placed in the mines. Year 2 have been really enthusiastic and keen to learn lots about our history.

This afternoon we learnt about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and how he changed the way that Victorians traveled. We compared transport in Victorian times to now.

On Monday we are going to the farm. If anyone is available to come with us we would like to have a couple of parent helpers. If you are available could you please let me know as soon as possible please.
