Year 2: Week 3 of learning and fun!

This week in DT and Science, the children have all been learning cutting, grating, snipping and spreading skills. This is in preparation of them designing and making their wraps.

In Maths we are still trying really hard to partition our tens and ones and have been placing numbers on a numberline.

In English we have started our new book 'The Bear and the Piano'. We started by writing forming noun phrases such as 'the tuneful, tinkly music' (adjective, adjective noun)

As well as this we have been having lots of adventure time.

In PE we have been carrying on with movement and balance. Mrs Smith leads our Tuesday PE sessions at the moment. We are sending Mrs Hibberd our get well soon wishes and look forward to having her back with us soon.

Home learning this week: I have set a task on Purplemash for this weeks home learning.

Have a lovely weekend!

Collision Detection in 2Code

Today in Computing with Mr Spracklen, Year 2 explored an exciting new coding idea called collision detection. This is when the computer recognises that two objects have touched each other and makes something happen as a result.

We began by thinking back to last week’s Air Traffic Control game. We remembered how the helicopter made a sound when it collided with the plane. That was an example of a collision detection event in action!

Using 2Code, we worked through the Princess and Frog activities.

First, we made the princess move across the screen and stop when she bumped into the frog. Then we added a second action – the frog magically changed into a prince when the collision happened!

By the end of the lesson, we could:

  • Plan an algorithm that uses collision detection.

  • Create a program where something happens when two objects collide.

  • Read blocks of code and predict what the program would do.

Stay tuned for more #InspiredToLearn coding fun!

Year 2: A brilliant week 2!

Wow what an amazing week we have had in Year 2! The children are working so hard in all lessons so don't be surprised if they are tired at home. 😊

We had an exciting delivery of new resources for our outside area today so the children have been helping to organise where they would like everything. We are trying to build up their independence.

This week in English we have been focussing on capital letters, full stops, common nouns, proper nouns and making a list with commas. This weeks home learning focuses on this.

In Maths we are still working really hard to be able to partition 2 digit numbers into tens and ones. Thank you for the home learning on this. There were a few misconceptions on how many tens. We count how many rods of ten we can see so 2 tens and 3 ones then we break that into 20+3.

In your child's home learning folder this week they will have another laminated copy of their passwords. The previous one we have attached in their home learning folders have the wrong passwords on now.

Home learning

  • Nouns sheet
  • Handwriting practice
  • Practicing spelling rules (Mrs Thorpe's group)
Here is an online link to the above sheets.

Please can you record any stories you read in your child's reading record. Book bags and reading records to come in everyday please.

Have a lovely weekend

Year 2: Vision support workshop today and link for spellings

Today the children had a worksop with Sharon Cade from Vision support to talk about vision impairments. We learn't about how we can support children with visual impairments and then learnt what the vision impairments might be like for some people by wearing special glasses. It was really good for the children to understand how they can support their friends with visual impairments and we even agreed on a safe place in the playground to meet. For some reason the ipad has not loaded the photos so I will add these at the end of the week.

Apologies about the mix up with spellings and home learning this week. Here is a link to Mrs Thorpe's spelling practice sheet

Mr Spracklen has updated our computer logins and so the ones we have sent home may not work. We will be sending new ones home very soon.

If you have any problems or want to ask any questions then please feel free to get in contact via email or catch me at the door.

Unit 2.1 - Coding - Lesson 1

We learnt today that in computing, a set of instructions is called an 'ALGORITHM'. It would be great to know who can remember this word at home tonight?

With our new knowledge, Mr Spracklen put us in charge of a VIRTUAL AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER on Purple Mash. It was very exciting! We had to use algorithms to control the planes and helicopters.

Year 2: A fantastic full first week and information for you all.

Hello everyone, I hope you've had a lovely weekend. Thank you to all the parents that were able to attend the parent information session last week. If you weren't able to make it then hopefully you have been able to catch up with the video. If you have any questions at all then please come and see me at the door in the morning.

On Friday we collected in the reading records but were missing about 10 of them. Please do get in the habit of putting the reading record, books and home learning folder in your child's book bag everyday and bringing them in to school. We collect them every morning and the children get their books at certain times of the day.

English

This week I have been getting to know the children and their abilities in writing. We will carry this on next week but focus more on SPAG before moving on to our book focus.

Maths

This week the children have been learning about tens and ones and how to partition numbers. This is quite a tricky concept for some children and so to further support the children to really understand this I sent home a tens and ones home learning sheet. More about this further down the blog.

We will be carrying on learning how to partition 2 digit numbers this week using part whole models.

Science

In Science we have started our new topic on Humans. The children will learn about what it is to be healthy. The children tasted foods from the 4 main food groups and then had to decide what group they belonged to.

If anyone has any job related experience where they might want to lead a short fitness session or if we have a parent that is a dentist, dietitian or chef then we would LOVE to have you in the class. Real life people who the children know and have jobs that they could have really sticks in their minds.

Home learning

This week I have sent home a tens and ones sheet. If you'd like to know how to support your child with this then I have made a short video.

I have also sent home a guide on how to access AR reading. My spelling group should have come home with their AR reading number. Please access this at home if you are able and complete the quizzes with your child. The library is open every morning from 8.30am and also after school if you would like to go their with your child.

I sent home a spellings rule sheet for my group last week. Please practice this throughout the week, our spelling check will be on Friday.

Getting Back on the Chromebooks

Today in Year Two we revisited Unit 1.1 to help us get familiar again with using the Chromebooks. We practised logging in with our own usernames and passwords, learning how important it is to keep these safe and private – just like we would keep a key safe to our own home.

Once logged in, we had the chance to explore Purple Mash. We reminded ourselves how to log out properly (like shutting the door when you leave a room) and enjoyed creating and customising our own avatars to represent us online.

The children did brilliantly at remembering these important steps for staying safe and organised when using technology.

We are now ready and confident to use the Chromebooks for our learning this term!

Year 2: Welcome to Year 2!

Year 2 – Our First Day Together

What a wonderful first day we have had in Year 2! The children settled in brilliantly, quickly learning our new routines and showing such enthusiasm for the year ahead. It was also lovely to see so many wings this morning – thank you so much for your support with this.

We began the day by working together to create our class charter, thinking carefully about the kind of classroom we want and how we can all play our part in making it a happy, safe and fun place to learn. The children also started painting their creative curriculum aprons, and we are very excited to see how these turn out as the year goes on!

This afternoon, the children had the chance to meet Miss Hall, who will be leading their PE lessons on Friday afternoons. They will also be supported throughout the week by our brilliant team of teaching assistants.

A few reminders for the weeks ahead:

  • Please make sure your child has a bookbag in school every day.

  • PE kits should be full, labelled, and left in school.

  • We kindly ask that you encourage your child to be independent by taking out their own belongings and coming into the cloakroom by themselves in the morning.

Finally, a quick note that Monday is our parent information session (in the staffroom from 9am) – it would be wonderful if you are able to attend.

We are so proud of how well the children have started their Year 2 journey and look forward to an exciting year ahead together!

If you have any questions then feel free to catch me at the door in the morning.

Have a lovely weekend!
