Y2 - Maths Learning - Week Beginning 22nd May 2017

This week we have been revising key skills and concepts.  Some areas that we need to practise are:
Quartering shapes: How can you fold or draw lines on a shape to make quarters?
Using the division sign: Can the children work out simple division statements relating to their times tables?
Odd and Even numbers:  What do even numbers end with?
Adding and subtracting:  Using 10s and 1s to add two digit numbers and subtract two digit numbers.
Eg: 56+38=    or  ?-5=52
Why not have a go at home?
We have been really pleased in the last few weeks at how many children have been achieving certificates in Mathletics.  Last week 20 year children managed a certificate and this week 22 children have one so far.  This is a brilliant effort and far higher than the numbers receiving certificates in other classes.  Well done!

Y2 - Literacy Learning - 25th May 2017

This week we have been looking at writing reports.  The children have been working together collaboratively to produce brainstorms, fact sheets and posters about sea turtles.  It has been lovely to see the children working together and supporting each other with their learning.  Well done year 2.

Y2 - Spellings - 25th May 2017

This holiday there are no new spellings to learn.  Instead practise spelling the common exception words in the middle of your reading records.  How many can you spell.  Also, spend some time looking at the different sounds you see there.  Please bring along any evidence that you have been learning these and we will reward you with a Superhero point!

Y2 Home Learning - 25th May 2017

Mr Willy Wonka himself has invited us to design a new chocolate or sweet for his factory.  He would like you to tell him the ingredients you would use and the method (how you would make it), then if you have time perhaps you could make a little sample of your sweet or chocolate to try at school.  As we are a healthy school we will not be eating lots and lots of your designs, just a little taste test and then we will send the remainder home for your family to enjoy.  We also have a Wonka Day planned on Wednesday 19th July, for this day we will be dressing up as characters from the book so you have lots of time to think about what to wear!  Enjoy your half term break, let's hope it is a sunny one.

Y2 - Visit from Grant Fielder - 25th May 2017

The children in Year Two had fun doing their "Super Schools" activities today. They all managed to do really well, completing the four challenging exercises that they had been practising.
We then saw a fantastic display of Mountain Bike Stunts performed by British champion, Grant Fielder.
Well done to those children who have managed to collect some sponsorship money.

Y2 - Jigsaw Information Session - 17th May for the 23rd May 2017

As part of our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health education) we follow a programme called JIGSAW. The sessions from September build upon children’s emotional literacy, self-esteem and knowledge of who they are, how they relate to one another and the world in a positive and healthy way. You may have heard of the class’s JIGSAW friend? The summer term units are about ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing me’. Within the ‘Changing me’ puzzle in every year group there are two or three lessons which help children understand the changes that occur to our bodies.
We invite you to attend a session on Tuesday 23rd May at 9am in the school hall, in which we will give you more of an insight into what your child will be learning about and discussing at age appropriate levels.
We hope you are in agreement that materials of Jigsaw are important for children’s development. If you do have concerns please do talk with the class teacher at a convenient time.

Y2 - Stan the Spider Crab - 17th May 2017

We had a visit from James and Stan the Spider Crab on Monday.  The children were amazed at how gentle and interesting Stan was.  We found out all about Spider Crabs from James and his visit has inspired our report writing this week.  Each of the children should have brought home a spider crab shell and a little treat!  Many thanks to James for giving up his time to bring Stan to see us!

Y2 Maths Learning - Week Beginning 8th May 2017

This week we have been revising our 3D shape, the children have really enjoyed using polydron to build 3D shapes from given 2D shapes and have played a game to support their learning.  This game is available on Children's Links, Year 2, Maths, Bottom Middle Icon.
In addition to this we have been linking division and fractions.  When dividing it is useful to phrase the question as:  How many 5s in 20 for 20 divided by 5 for example.  This way the children can use their times tables to help find the answers.
Why not try these at home...
30 divided by 5=
1/2 of 16=
How many 2s in 10?
James has 40 sweets to share between his 9 friends and himself.  How many do they get each?
What is 3/4 of 24?

Y2 Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 8th May 2017

This week we have generated our own silly traditional tales using a dice to generate a basic story.  The children have then improved their sentences by using noun phrases to describe characters and objects in the story.  They have then created their own cartoon strips to illustrate the story.  Great fun!  Why not have a go at home to see what story you come up with?

Y2 - Spellings - 12th May for 19th May

This week the spellings are as follows:
Red Phonics group:
word, work, worm, world, worth, war, warm, towards.  The challenge is to find more words that have an or or and ar after a w.
Orange and Yellow Phonics group:
word, work, worm, world, worth.  The challenge is to look for other words that have an or after a w.
Green and Blue groups have words related to the sounds that they are currently learning and revising.

Y2 - Spellings - Friday 5th May for Friday 12th May

This week the spellings are as follows:
Red phonics group: want, wanted, watch, watches, wash, washing, wander, wandered, quantity, quantities, squash, squashed.
Orange and yellow phonics group: want, wash, watch, wander, squash, quantity
Green phonics group will have indivdualised spellings to support learning of specific sounds.

Y2 - Maths Learning - Week Beginning 1st May 2017

This week we have been plugging away at telling the time, writing digital times and calculating with time.  The children are becoming even more confident in reading the time from analogue clocks, many of them using five minute intervals well.  The children have used clocks to move time forwards and backwards by hours, half-hours and quarter-hours.  I have been really impressed at how much work the children are doing at home to support their learning in this area.  Several children have been drawing clocks and Harry DB actually made his own wooden clock with hands - amazing!  To continue learning a
t home you could keep asking your child what the time is, remember to get them to look for the hour first!

Y2 - Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 1st May

This week we have been looking at how we can alter the setting or detail of a traditional story to make our own versions.  We have read Little Red by Lynn Roberts, this is a version of Little Red Riding hood which has a boy in the main role and the wolf is bribed with fizzy, ginger beer!  Next week we will have a go at writing our own versions of the same story.  At home you could have a go at telling a familiar story but change where it takes place... who knows where it may lead?

Y2 - Home learning - 4th May 2017

Y2 Home Learning – 5th May 2017
Favourite Animal / Favourite Plant
This week for home learning I would like you to find out some more about your favourite animal and plant.  You could draw a diagram and label it or print out some pictures and write about them.  Try to give some information about your chosen animal or plant and say why you like it.  Please bring your work back to school by Friday 12th May.
I have also provided you with an eye-spy sheet.  See how many of these plants and animals you can spot between now and next Friday.

Y2 - Parent's Information Session - 4th May for 8th May

There will be a Parent's Information session to tell you more about this term in year 2 on Monday 8th May at 9am in the school hall.  Please come along and find out more about what we are up to including topics, tests and timetables (and lots of other exciting things not beginning with t).
