Maths Learning - Week Beginning 28th September 2015

This week in Maths we have been looking at how our knowledge of place value can help us to add and subtract.  Using the Place Value Cards shown on the blog a couple of weeks ago the children have been partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and units and writing them in their expanded form.  For example 254=200+50+4 or 45=40+5.  We have also been looking at inverse operations, for example the opposite of +5 is -5.  These skills will help children to be able to see pattern in number, be able to add and subtract quickly and check their answers.  One of the things we have noticed that the children are less confident at is subtraction, we will be looking at this in more detail next week.  At home practice counting backwards, taking away small numbers using objects as counters or subtracting 10s from a 2 digit number: Eg 56-10=
