Maths Learning - Week Beginning 22nd June

This week in Maths we have been looking at measures.  The children have been focusing on measuring length, weight and capacity using standard units - mm, cm and m; g and kg and ml and l.  They have had lots of practical experience of using rulers, tape measures, scales, balances and measuring jugs and cylinders to measure things around the classroom.  I have been tickled pink with how well they remember these units and how accurate they are beginning to be with their measuring.  One area of green for growth for many of the children would have to be finding the difference between two measures.  At home you could try asking children how much bigger one thing is than another, can they use a ruler to find out the difference?  Later in the week the children will be using time as a measure and recapping on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes or minute.

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 22nd June

This week we have continued to write non-chronological reports, (information texts).  The children have been using information that they already know; have found out during our trip to the museum last week or have discovered during our humanities lesson to write their own "Complete Guide to Fossils".  At the beginning of the week, the children had fun finding all of the mistakes I made when I tried to write my own book and now they have the opportunity to write their own.  These will be displayed in the classroom soon along with all of our other Jurassic Coast work.

Wonkatastic!

We had a wonderful time last Monday, dressed to impress as characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the class took part in Drama, Science and Technology based lessons.  The children invented and improved their own chocolate factory machines, designed their own Wonka Bar Wrappers, made a film for assembly and had their very own Chocolate party complete with Chocolate Fountain.  Mr Willy Wonka would have been proud!  The costumes were fantastic, thank you so much for sending your children in costume.

Supply teacher - Mr Martin

As you will be currently aware Mr Farrington is off on sick leave. There is a need for myself therefore to be released (reluctantly!)  Out of the classroom to maintain and ensure all within school is running efficiently.

We have therefore employed Mr Martin to come in and teach Thurs and Fri mornings until the end of term. Mr Martin before retirement was the deputy Head at Broadmayne School, he has plenty of experience in Yr 1 and Yr 2 and comes along with a great track record as a fun, exciting teacher! I will then teach the class as before on Thursday afternoons. Friday afternoon consists of a PE teacher input lesson and Golden Time.
I know you will make him feel welcome and support him in getting to know us all!

Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Mrs Bates through the school office.

Sweet Heaven

We are planning a piece of themed recycling next week.  Week Beginning 15th June.  Please could you bring in any sweet wrappers, chocolate bar wrappers or crisp packets that you have?
Many thanks.

Safe and Sound

Year 2 had a wonderful time at Streetwise safety centre today.  They entered into a range of different scenarios where they had to be danger detectives.  All of the children were fantastic, sharing ideas, asking questions and some children very bravely made a 999 call!  Lots of really useful and relevant learning to keep them safe everywhere!  The children all have a certificate and will be bringing a pack home during our Healthy Living Week to remind them about all of the things they have learned today.

Drama Day Reminder

Just to remind you about your golden tickets!  On Monday you need to come dressed as a character from the story and bring along the food you have signed up for in order for us to make our own chocolate confections!  We are looking forward to a fun day!

Bike it breakfast - 9th June

On Tuesday 9th June we are holding another "Bike-It-
Breakfast".
All children and parents who cycle or scooter to school
will be offered a drink and healthy flapjack.
We will be running
various other Biking and Scooting activities throughout the day.
This
"Bike-It-Breakfast" coincides with a special assembly we will be having
during the day.
In this assembly, we will be celebrating our
activities as an Eco-School and will be presented with our Eco-Schools
Silver award.

Literacy Learning - Week beginning 1st June

This week we have started to look at report writing and how we can arrange information to make it easier for the reader to read.  We have used titles and sub headings to make our work clearer.  The children have been discussing paragraphing and using introductions in their reports to explain the purpose of their report.  In future weeks the children will be writing reports about fossils and the Jurassic Coast.  We would welcome any information you have about rocks and fossils to enhance this topic and our writing.

Maths Learning - Week beginning 1st June

This week the children have been investigating different ways of presenting data.  They have used Venn diagrams, Pictograms and Carroll Diagrams to interpret and sort information.  Towards the end of the week they will be using these different ways of sorting data to try and prove statements about the class are true or false.  For example: More girls than boys like eating apples.  At home you could look out for data presented in charts and diagrams and talk about what they show.

Drama Day

Greetings to you, the lucky Parents of children in year 2,
We will be having a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Drama / Science and Technology chocolate inventing day on Monday 15th June.  Tremendous things are in store for the children!  They are invited to come to school dressed as a character from the story.  They will be taking part in drama, science and technology themed sessions to celebrate our learning over the last few weeks.  Not only will the children be inventing new and amazing confections, but there will also be time for tasting too!  In order to do this we will need some help with ingredients, please sign up on the list in the classroom to indicate what you are able to bring.  Please send the food in with the children on Monday 15th.  One more thing – be certain your child has this ticket with them, otherwise they will not be admitted!
Warm Regards
The Year 2 Team
