Year 2 Update – A Creative Frosty Adventure! (information about Christmas performance)

Year 2 Update – A Creative Frosty Adventure!

What a wonderfully creative couple of days we’ve had in Year 2!

Yesterday, the children took part in a special creative day, exploring a range of artistic skills and techniques. They experimented with wax-resist painting, developed their fine motor skills, and produced some truly beautiful artwork. Every child contributed their ideas, and together they helped transform our small area into something magical for our upcoming art exhibit.

Our learning has been inspired by Jack Frost, and the children have loved listening to stories about him and discussing all the wintery imagery and magic he brings. Their artwork reflects this theme beautifully, and we can’t wait for you to see it.

On Monday, we’ll be continuing this creative theme. The children will be using their imaginations to design their own frosty lands—complete with maps, laws, features, and persuasive ideas to encourage others to visit. It promises to be a day full of storytelling, imagination, and collaboration.

Then, in the afternoon, Year 2 will be mixing with classes across the school to share what they’ve been learning. Together, the children will build and combine their ideas to create the lands collaboratively, celebrating creativity and teamwork across year groups.

When arriving through the hall on Monday, please head to the left to view our new Year 2 art exhibit before continuing out of the hall and into the classroom as usual.

We’re excited to share their imaginative worlds with you!

Curriculum Updates

English

In English, we have been using the book The Way Home for Wolf to practise expanding sentences using expanded noun phrases and conjunctions. The children have produced some brilliant examples, such as:

“The scared, freezing wolf fell into the water because the ice cracked.”

We are so proud of the progress they are making in building rich, detailed sentences.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction using base ten. The children have been using their understanding of tens and ones to add and subtract confidently and explain their thinking. This hands-on approach is helping them build strong number sense.

Science

In Science, we carried out an investigation to discover which material is the most waterproof. The children discussed fair testing, made predictions, and worked together to test different materials. Their curiosity and teamwork were fantastic to see.

Home Learning

For the rest of this term, our home learning will focus on learning lines for our performance:

Today, your child has brought home:

  • Their lines (some children requested to not have lines but they will be singing and will be on stage at some point during the performance). If your child is a narrator then they will have the script in front of them.

  • Costume requests

If you have any questions about this, please come and see me.We will begin practising lines next week.

Costumes are needed by Thursday 11th December, please, in a named bag.

Although we are not setting additional home learning at the moment, please continue to:

  • Read every day

  • Access Ed Shed

  • Use Numbots to keep building those key number skills.

Year 2: Pictures of our week and home learning

Our ipad has now updated so I can finally share some pictures of the children learning. As part of our Art this half term, the children have been focussing on Sculpture. We have looked at the work of Anthony Gormley and the children have begun the process of sculpting their own snowflake for our 'Whispers of Winter' exhibition. It's been a learning curve which has tested everyone's resilience but they are turning out amazing!

In Science we have started our new topic of everyday materials. This weeks home learning is linked to this. Please see the link to the sheet here (pages 1+2) but a hard copy will be sent home tomorrow.

In PE on Monday the children had their first session with miniballers coach Matt who was teaching them about invasion games.

In Forest School the children searched for hidden woodland animals and worked as a team to build dens.

Today we celebrated 'World Kindness Day'. We shared how we can show kindness and each child was given a positive saying affirmation. We listened to Michael Rosen in assembly and thought about who could be our class Kindness ambassadors. These children will be meeting with Mrs March on Monday to discuss how we can spread kindness in our school.

If you can please access EdShed (Mrs Thorpe's group). Book bags, books and reading records tomorrow please. We aim to go to the library but you are welcome to change the books whenever the children need to.

Also coming home tomorrow is a list of key dates and events over this busy Autumn 2.

Year 2: This week in Year 2

Today the children received a 'letter' from the library asking for them to look for a book called 'WOLVES' which needed to be taken back. We all searched in the library for wolf themed books. We finally found the book we were looking for and shared it in the class. We will be using this story to write some information about wolves.

Apologies about having to cancel the Number fluency session last week. I will reschedule this as soon as possible.

In Science this term we are going to be focussing on materials and their uses.

Last week in Forest School the children spent some time in the nature garden with the forest school leader. We have decided to change the day of our Forest School so we can use the Forest School area. So from this week it will now be on Wednesday afternoon. Please can you share this with parents in the group chat or if you know someone doesn't check the blogs.

On Thursday it is World Kindness day. We will be watching Michael Rosen online and sharing some mindfulness activities.

This Friday is Children in Need. The children can wear home clothes, ideally with something yellow.

As always, if you have any concerns or would like to discuss anything about your child please catch me in the mornings or email me.

In Maths today we were using a numberline to add on.

This afternoon we were focussing on our recording skills with 'The Curly Wurly' challenge. The children had 3 minutes and they had to try and stretch it as much as they could without breaking it! They when had to record what they found on a table.

If your child attended rocket club last half term then these same groups will start again on Thursday.
