Shire hall trip and reminder about tomorrow - Year 2

Hi all, we hope you are well.

We had the most amazing trip yesterday to the Shire Hall. Every single child represented the school incredibly and behaved so well. Well done Year 2! We learnt about The Great Fire of Dorchester and linked this in with The Great Fire of London that we have been learning about. We found out where in Dorchester it started, how it started and how it affected Dorchester.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Christmas Craft Day. We are asking that children come into school dressed as an elf, wearing a christmas jumper or in non-school uniform. Children will be taking part in 3 activities across the day where they will be mixing with other years and making christmas crafts.

Children will be coming home tomorrow with a costume list with some ideas on what they should wear for our Winter show.

Any questions, please let me know.

Year 2 - Week 3

Hi everyone! We hope you have had a great weekend. We have had another super week in Year 2!

In Maths we finished our addition and subtraction unit, looking at mixed calculations and missing number sentences. This week we will move on to our next unit - 2D and 3D shapes. In English we started to explore diary writing and wrote a diary about what we did on the weekend and focussed on writing in past tense. We will be continuing with diary writing this week. In Science we continued to look at the use of everyday materials and explored which materials would be best for curtains. We will be starting to learn the songs for our Winter show from tomorrow!

We look forward to another week in Year 2!

Autumn 2 - Week 2

Hello everyone, we hope you have a lovely weekend!

This week in Year 2 we have been busy with lots of fun and lots of learning.

In Maths we have continued to look at addition and subtraction. We have been using different resources to help us add and subtract two 2 digit numbers and looking at how many more and how many fewer. In English we have been focussing on the book 'somebody swallowed Stanley' and making predictions about how the story ends. In Science we have started a new topic all about everyday materials. We looked at which material would be best for a waterproof coat.

Next week is the start of our therapeutic thinking week and we will be taking part in different activities related to this.

Please can you ensure your child has their PE in school, as we still have some children without these. Also, as the weather is getting colder please can you ensure children have a suitable coat.

Friday is also children in need, please see the email that was sent for the details about this day.

Any questions, please email!

Unit 2.2 – Online Safety - Lesson 1

In Y2 Computing today we started our new unit on 'Online Safety'.

The aims of our session were -

- To know how to refine searches using the Search tool.
- To know how to share work electronically using the display boards (on Purple Mash).
- To use digital technology to share work on Purple Mash to communicate and connect with others locally.
- To have some knowledge and understanding about sharing more globally on the Internet.

We all did a great job of accessing Purple Mash and using the 'Search' tool -

Purple Mash is an example of SAFE SEARCH.

In our lesson today, we talked about the importance of only using SAFE SEARCH tools.

Google or Bing is NOT a SAFE SEARCH tool and should not be used by children without adult supervision.

We also talk about the dangers of searching the Internet today -

It would be great if everyone could continue this discussion on at home.

Would your child come to you if they did come across anything inappropriate or upsetting online?

How would you respond if this happened?

These are all important things to think about in our increasingly digital world.

Happy half term - Year 2

Hi everyone! We just wanted to wish you all a happy and relaxing half term! All children have worked so hard during this half term and really deserve the break.

Children have come home today with their home learning for the half term. We are asking children to keep a diary and tell us all about what they have done during half term. One of the main focuses for this writing is for children to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

If your child is in a RWI phonics group they would not have come home with spellings or a book bag book. The reasoning for this is some children may be changing groups after half term. All children SHOULD have come home with a library book.

Have a great half term!

Marbles and learning exhibition - Year 2

Hi everyone, I just wanted to update you on a couple of things.

The children have filled their marble jar up half way. We add marbles to the jar when the whole class or groups of children have demonstrated amazing behaviours such as working well together, representing the school well on a trip and working hard in lessons. Due to this being filled half way, the children have earned a free afternoon where they lead their own learning. They are so incredibly proud of the achievement and are so excited for tomorrow afternoon.

We will be holding an exhibition of learning on Wednesday 1st November 2:30-3:30. During this time families are welcome to come into school and help their children take part in a task. All will be revealed on the day! However, if you do have any cardboard boxes laying around at home, please do bring these in before the day.

Any questions about this, please let me know!

Year 2 - Week 6

Happy Sunday everyone! We cannot believe that we have one more week left of our first half a term in Year 2, time has flown by!

We have had yet another great week in Year 2. In Maths we have continued to look at addition and subtraction and have explored lots of different methods when calculating sums. In English we created a character and setting for an adventure story that we will be writing next week. In Science, we have continued to look at plants.

This week we were lucky enough to be visited by a very talented Author - Jack Meggitt-Phillips. He spoke to us about his books, and engaged all the children with his humorous story telling. On Wednesday we will be visiting another author at the Dorchester Literary Festival.

Parent consultations are also coming up next week, if you have not yet booked an appointment with me, please send me an email and we can book in a time.

See you tomorrow!

Coding Buttons

Computing in Year Two was hard today, we had to show our 'Reggie: The Resilient Tortoise" learning powers to be successful.

Our aim was to understand the function of 'buttons' in a program.

We began by understanding what we meant by the term 'button' -

Next, we explored how to add our own buttons in the 'Design View' -

Finally, we explored how to code our buttons -

This was a lot to remember and as a group we had mixed success.

Next week, we will pick this up again and revise our understanding of coding buttons.

In the plenary of our lesson, Mr Spracklen showed us what the code in a game can look like when it is finished -

To explore this code and to play the game (Year Two were very keen to do this and I did promise I would post this link on the blog), please visit -

Author visits - 12th October and 18th October

Hi everyone, as per the letters that have been sent out previously. I am confirming the dates and times of our Year 2 author visits.

Thursday 12th October - 1:30-2:30. This is in the school hall with an author called Jack Meggit-Phillips. During this special visit, Mr. Jack Meggit-Phillips will engage our young readers in an interactive creative writing workshop titled "Writing with Beasts." This hour-long session will include puppetry, a Q&A with the author and readings from his latest book, "The Beast and the Bethany: The Villain’s Showdown," which is set to be released this Autumn. Your child will also have the opportunity to receive inspiration and prompts to create and finish their own short stories.

Wednesday 18th October - 10-11. We will be leaving school after register to walk to the Dorchester Literary Festival and will be returning for 11:30. This is with an author called Neal Layton.
Neal Layton is well-known for his engaging and beautifully illustrated children's books. During his visit, he will not only share his creative process and insights into the world of storytelling but will also interact with our young learners, inspiring their imaginations and love for reading.

Any other questions please let me know.

Year 2 - Week 5

Hi everyone, we hope you have had a great weekend!

We have been very busy in Year 2, however, it has been a great week. This week we visited the farm and the children were amazing and represented the school incredibly well. We also had a visitor this week who talked to us about Judaism. We also made challah bread which the children loved making and eating. Harvest festival was a great success and children enjoyed making their own healthy wraps.

In Maths we started our new unit of addition and subtraction which we will continue this week. In English we wrote a recount of our trip to the farm. This week we will be focussing on a book called 'into the forest' which is going to support our adventure writing. In Science we continued to look at plants, which will continue next week.

See you all tomorrow,
