This week we have begun our new topic of Victorians, for the week's leading up to Christmas we will be looking at how the Victorians celebrated Christmas. The classroom is festooned with lovely Christmas evergreen and we have begun making all sorts of Victorian decorations, cards and keepsakes. Just a reminder that we will be going to Priest House Museum on Monday 5th December. The children and adults will need to wear their Victorian Costumes (don't worry if you are short of items - we have a few at school). Please make sure your child has a few layers underneath because it can be quite cold.

Y2 - We have filled the marble jar! - 28th November 2016
Wow! Well done year 2, you have worked hard as a team and managed to fill the marble jar! That is 75 times we have noticed you showing us exactly the right attitude to your learning. As a reward on Friday 2nd December we will be having a PJ and teddy party. Please bring along your favourite teddy, a pillow and your pyjamas in a bag. After lunch the children will snuggle down with popcorn, hot chocolate and cookies to enjoy their reward!
Well done year 2!

Y2 Maths learning - Week beginning 21st November 2016
This week we have been looking at measuring the height and length of various objects. We have started looking at metres and centimetres as standard units of measurement. We have talked about how we can be accurate and careful in our measuring and had a go at using various equipment to measure objects in the classroom. At home you could use a tape measure to find things that are more than, about the same as or less than a metre. When measuring anything in metres and centimetres check that the 0 on the ruler is lined up with the end of the object you are measuring - this is the concept that the children find trickiest!
Y2 Literacy Learning - Week beginning 21st November
This week we have been planning our Big Write for next week and looking at more information on lighthouses including the wonderful home learning that has been brought into school this week. Well done everyone for all of your hard work. It was of a particularly high standard for year 2, we had great fun sharing it.

Year 2 - The Big Write 2 Home Learning - 25th November 2016
The
Big Write 2
Writing
a letter
We have been practicing our letter writing
skills over the past week or so. For our
next Big Write on Wednesday the 30th November we would like the
children to write a letter to a real person.
The children have already had a think about who this could be and what
they would like to say. Over the weekend
could you:
1. Talk
to your child about their letter and what they would like to say,
2. Maybe collect some pictures that remind them
of what to write
3. Have a go at finding an address for them to
send it to?
On Wednesday we will write our letters in our
Big Write session and after they have been marked and a best copy made we will
send them home for you to see and actually post with your child if you wish!
Talking about your child’s writing with them
will make them more confident and able to have a go!
Some ideas for who to send your letter to…
Father Christmas
A celebrity from your favourite TV programme
A sports
person that you admire
An author
A member of your family
Try to steer
away from social media people because we are trying to use postal addresses
with this topic, digital communication will be covered at a later date!

it in what ever way you like and bring it into school.

Last day for Operation Christmas child shoe boxes!
Just
a reminder that tomorrow will be the last day that we will be taking
the 'Operation Christmas child' shoe boxes at school. Mrs Mewitt has
kindly said she would take the shoe boxes that people have bought in to
school to the drop off point in Weymouth. So if you have a shoe box
please bring them in tomorrow. Also please remember that the shoe boxes
need £3 in them to support the transportation fees.
Thank you for supporting this cause

Y2 - Maths Learning - Week Beginning 7th November 2016
This week we have been looking at subtraction and how we can use counting backwards and our knowledge of tens and ones. At home, try counting back in 10s from any two digit number: 84, 74, 64, 54 and so on.
Then extend to taking 30 or 40 from a two digit number: 87-30=
By counting back 3 tens from 87 you should get to the answer.
It is only a short step from here to using a formal method for subtraction.

Y2 - A super assembly 12th November 2016
Well didn't the children do well this morning? We have been super
impressed with how quickly the children have picked up their words this
week and have been successful in reading these out and performing them
with such confidence.
This year's Christmas show will involve
all the children being narrators so a great start in thinking how to
project their voices and to not talk too quickly either.
The
children thoroughly enjoyed the Rama and Sita story and acting this out.
I think we have a 'peaceful' class as when it was time in the drama
for the 'battle' they were not in a rush to start one at all! Well done
to Jack and Leo for being the 'baddie' Ravana, the evil king with 10
heads!
Thank you to all of you who were able to come along and be an audience for the children.

Y2 - Home Learning - 4th November 2016
This half term we have started our new topic of "An island home". During this topic we will be looking at islands and island life through factual and fictional perspectives.
For home learning this week I would like the children to design their own island treasure maps to inspire their writing in school. Please encourage your child to be as creative as possible. I have included some pictures to help ; or they may prefer to do their own design completely; if they prefer ICT then this link to the cbbc website might be more their thing...

I look forward to seeing where the treasure is buried!

All Years - Christmas Cards - 2nd November 2016
Christmas card orders
We received communication today that the online ordering for the xmas cards has now failed completely. The company are reverting to paper orders and a pack is being sent to school. As far as we are aware any successful online orders are still valid but all others will need to complete paper order forms and bring money to school. This is not an ideal situation however POWSA are at hand to help you solve any issues and can take cash or cheques.
So, on Friday 4 th November and Monday 7 th November before and after school POWSA will be manning a table in the foyer where you can fill in the order forms and hand over cash or cheques. We apologise for this inconvenience, however this is out of our control and are working hard to make the process successful!

Christmas cards order
Christmas card orders
Hopefully you have all received your child’s card design?
You were given the information to order through the company directly on the
back of the art work. The art work needs to come back to school to your
child’s classroom, into their envelope - by Friday 4th November –
end of this week, ready to be sent
off.
The company will be collecting on Monday 7th
November from our school office, no set time has been given so it is vitally
important the art work is back in the class envelope on Friday please.
We are hoping for the cards to be delivered back to school
around 22nd November.
