HELP - a desperate plea!!!!!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone have any compost that I could use tomorrow, pretty please - rather than spending a fortune on new bags, I would rather see if there are any half bags that need using up first!?

Also, if anyone has any part used BRIGHT gloss paint that they could donate for the tyre planters, that would be great too!

Thank you!

Mrs. Johnson Year 4

Maths Learning - Week Beginning 22nd February

In Maths this week we have been looking at how we can sort data and read charts and tables to help us to understand what data tells us.  The children have enjoyed drawing and reading pictograms, bar charts, sorting diagrams and tables.  They have been practicing asking and answering questions about the information that they have sorted.

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 22nd February

This week the children have been getting stuck into our Great Fire of London topic by learning about the main events of what happened during the fire and by finding out about a famous diarist called Samuel Pepys.  The children have been considering how they would write a diary and what they would include if they were living through the fire and have used their imaginations to plan what they will write.  Help your child at home by going on the Great Fire Game - http://www.fireoflondon.org.uk/game/

Eco Week Update - 26th February 2016

We are looking forward to a busy week learning about our school grounds and how we can work to improve, maintain and enjoy what we have around us.  On Monday the whole school will be taking part in eco-based activities around the school, these may involve working outside and getting muddy!  Please could you ensure that your child has wellies in school and comes to school in old trousers for the day (they can still wear their school polo shirt and jumper).  It would also be advisable for your child to have a spare pair of play clothes to change into should they get really messy!

We need your help!

Eco week – Week commencing 29th February

We need your help!

Monday 29th February – We are having a whole school eco activity day.  The children will have chosen three activities they wish to do; they will visit other classrooms and work with children across the school.  If you are able to come on in and lend a hand, then please let your class’s team know. The more helpers the more successful these activities can be!

Also, events and learning through eco week are going on throughout this week. Again, if you have a small amount of time spare, please do let us know, we would really appreciate any extra offers of help. Again, please talk to your child’s teacher/ team.

Finally, thank you to all of you who have been bringing in wanted items by staff for eco week, we very much appreciate all of the items, these will help in ensuring the children’s learning and activities can be as exciting and fun as planned!

Reading Targets - 8th February 2016

This week I have stuck a reading target in the children's diaries. These are taken from the Year 2 curriculum. For example- I can read words with two or three syllables. So when your child is reading with you at home please encourage them to work towards their target and praise any efforts that they are making to improve. If you have any concerns on your child's reading at home or would like to discuss these targets please feel free to catch me in the morning or after school.

Maths Learning - Week Beginning 1st February 2016

This week we have turned our attention to geometry!  We have been looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.  This involves the children using the proper mathematical language for describing shapes.  You could help at home by recognising and naming shapes around you:  How many rectangles can you spot?  Give the child a dice or a box and ask them what shape they are (cube / cuboid).  You could also encourage your child to count edges on 2D shapes and faces on 3D shapes.  Did you know that the proper term for corners on 2D and 3D shapes is vertices !

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 1st February

This week the children have been back in time using the magic key!  They experienced what it would be like to work with Florence Nightingale at her hospital in the Crimea, they planned their stories as well as reading other examples of similar stories.  The children ended the week by writing their whole story.  They are brilliant, entertaining, exciting and well worth a read.  Well done year 2.

A new Mathletics record! - 8th February 2016

Amazing news, year 2 managed to get no less than 16 certificates last week for their learning with Mathletics.  This is amazing year 2, we are so proud of you!  Keep up the hard work this week and we will get those certificates printed off as soon as the copier is working!

Praise assembly week ending 5th February

Praise assembly

There have been lots of improvements in reading and writing this week throughout the class, well done to all the children for their hard work and determination to do better and improve their work (green for growth!).

Special mentions to:

Andrew - super improvement with his reading
Charlotte and James - for the super twists in their story writing
Rosa - for her thoughtfulness
Finley - for his caring side to others in class

And in RE our topic this half term has been the faith of Islam and specifically how and when do Muslims pray, why do they do this five times day. The class had a visitor Adeel last week who came into school to talk to the class about praying. He showed the class his prayer mat, explained that you can pray wherever, he uses his office when he is working. the children listened really well, asked lots of questions and produced some informative writing in their literacy books.

Well done for their writing: Erica, Noah, Frank, William, Skye, Jamie, Poppy, Joe, Avril, James B, Odette.

Special well done for out of school success:

Erica - for super swimming!
Edward - appearing in the Echo, taking part in a staged production of Madam Butterfly!

The Big Write - 3rd February 2015

On Monday the 8th of February we will be having our Victorian Drama day.  Please remember to send your child to school in the costume that they wore to the Priest House Museum before Christmas.  On entry to the classroom for this day only we would ask you not to come in with your child as we will be acting out our parts from the moment we open the door!  During the day the children will be finding out about what it was like for children to live in Victorian times.  They will then use all of the ideas that they collect along with ideas from home to write a diary entry as if they were a Victorian child.  This will be the second Big Write that year 2 have done and they really enjoyed the last.  At the end of a busy afternoon of writing they will be rewarded with a Victorian afternoon high tea complete with Victoria sponge cakes made with their own fair hands!  Please could you help your child to write ideas for what they could write about in their diary entry on the back of this sheet?  Write down anything a Victorian child might have got up to in the course of their day.  Please return the sheet to school by Monday.

Holiday home learning! - For the half term holidays!

As promised I've posted this a little bit earlier to ensure everyone has time to complete the task!  After half term we will be learning about the great fire of London.  So in preparation we would like the children to have a go at creating their own London street:

On Friday we have sent home today a cardboard cut-out of a house. If your child wishes to they can colour this in, cut it out and stick together ready to being in the start of next term.
As we will be studying the Fire of London, if you child wishes to make their own house out of a cereal box, etc then please do! It would be lovely to be able to make a street scene with the children’s houses, and will also help explaining about the spread of the fire and other facts!
Thanks! Year 2 team
