Maths Learning - Week Beginning 27th April

This week we have been looking at multiplication and counting forwards and backwards in given multiples.  The children have really impressed me with their knowledge of counting on in 2s, 5s and 10s, but counting backwards has been a little bit more tricky!  The children have been practicing their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and using these facts to solve problems.  At home you could continue to learn these times tables facts by heart or practise counting backwards, some children find this really tricky especially over boundaries such as the 10s, 100s or 1000s.  For a challenge you could try counting backwards in 7s or 8s from a random number it's tricky!  Just to find out how tricky try saying a nursery rhyme backwards...

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 27th April

This week we have been looking at how Roald Dahl developed his characters in stories like Charlie and the Chocolate factory.  The children have been using powerful adjectives to describe their own character and are planning and writing a new chapter for the book called "The sixth golden ticket winner".  I have been really impressed with the children's imaginative response to these tasks.  Most of them are working hard to add more detail to their writing to really engage the reader.

PJ Friday!

Well lots of excited children arrived in school today, ready with teddies, toys and most importantly, PJs! A well deserved treat this afternoon of a Moo moo bar and snacks plus playing with their toys. This treat had been earned as the class had worked hard in working together, therefore gaining marbles to fill up the class jar.

We finished the week in literacy by writing instructions to our newly invented sweet, based upon Charlie and the chocolate factory.
We played a game called Totality in maths today which practises using our addition skills whilst using tactics to win against a partner! Please call in for a game sheet to take home if you'd like?!

Finally, a super set of results from the spelling test this week. It is noticeable that the children are really thinking about how to learn these words now, using strategies, funny rhymes and patterns really help learn these often tricky words, so well done and thank you for all your hard work too!

Welcoming our Student Teachers

Miss Mayo and Miss Sheppard have joined us again this term.  They will be supporting the teaching and learning in year 2 until June.  We welcome them to our class.

Literacy Learning - Week Beginning 20th April

This term we are looking in depth at a favourite book - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.  The children have enjoyed exploring characters, acting out scenes and even designing and writing instructions for their own sweet creations.  At home you might have more Roald Dahl books that you could enjoy together, or you could read ahead in Charlie and find out what happens next.  We are on chapter 9!

Parent's Information Session

Many apologies for forgetting the Parent's Information session this morning.  I have rearranged it for next Wednesday 29th April at 9.00am in the school hall.  I look forward to seeing you then.

Party!

As you may know, year 2 managed to fill their marble jar!  They have decided that they would like to have a pyjama party on Friday 24th April.  After their PE lesson the children will get changed into their jim-jams and play their favourite games for the afternoon.  They will be having milkshakes and fruit juice from Mrs Webbs “Moo, moo” bar as well as a few tasty treats that we have prepared earlier in the week.
Please can the children bring their PJs and favourite game (nothing precious) or book in a named plastic bag on Friday?

Maths Learning - week beginning 20th

This week we are working on our addition and subtraction facts.  The children have been thinking about using facts that they know such as 4+6=10, 5+15=20, etc to solve much larger problems.  They have used number lines to count forwards and backwards as well as find the difference.  We will be practicing using the vertical method for addition and subtraction as well as solving more problems later in the week.  Next week we will be moving on to multiplication and division.
