The Bengal Tiger and lots of other information about India week!

Over the last couple of days Year 2 have been engrossed in some Indian Art and cooking. We have been looking at the endangered Bengal Tiger.
The children have learnt lots of facts about the Bengal tiger and how this amazing creature prowls around the jungles of northern India.

All of the children have now made their own tigers, which like the real Bengal Tiger, have unique stripe patterns. They have also added to a collage picture which will be on display tomorrow afternoon in the hall with all of the other art we have made this week.

We have also been looking at some Indian tribal art. The children have painted their names in Hindi and then printed a pattern around the outside.

Finally the children have printed a very colourful headband which they will be wearing in their dance tomorrow.

We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow from 2pm. We will be dancing twice and hope that you come to enjoy our Chokito's that we have all made this week. Year 2 love these tasty little treats!

Our India day with Mr Farrington

Year 2 had a fun filled day yesterday with Mr Farrington. We learnt all about Indian small holdings and how they water their crops. We then split in to four groups and each child went to the following stations:

- Trying dips such as mango chutney and lime pickle.
-Eating a variety of fruit that they eat in India such as watermelon and pomegranate
-Talking about rice, where is it grown and what do the rice fields looks like. We also tasted basmati, pilau, biryani and peshwari rice.
-Tasting the delicious vegetable curries that Mr Farrington made.

Some of our children then took part in the assembly where they told the story of a young Indian boy that was so kind and caring and gave many things away but all he wanted was to have a drum.

After all of the eating and sampling foods that many children haven't tasted before we then watched Mr Farrington smash open a coconut and then we got to taste it!

After lunch the children then went with Mr Farrington in the hall to take part in a traditional Indian dance.

If you would like to see this dance and taste some scrumptious Indian food please come to our Indian café on Friday from 2pm. The children will be dancing twice in the afternoon.

This week!

This week is our last class assembly in Year 2! It will start at 9.20am on Friday in the hall. We will be practising this week and your child will be bringing their words home asap.

We will be carrying on looking at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Lots of children have mentioned that they have read some different Roald Dahl books. Maybe they could do a book review? Or make some of the characters? Or draw their favourite scene from one of the stories? I would really like some more home learning to display at the back of the classroom with all of our Roald Dahl books. Home learning is also a great way to get children motivated to write at home. I look forward to seeing what will come in!

With all of this hot weather we are having please make sure your children has sun cream, a hat and a drinks bottle.

Dips and dippers!

Thank you all for coming in to taste Year 2's dips and dippers. The children worked really hard designing their dip and thinking about what the best dippers would be.

All of the dips were very tasty I am sure you will agree! It was great to see how proud the children felt about their food.

In Art, Year 2 are now beginning to look at the work of Andy Warhol so watch this space!

It has been really nice having parents in this week to listen to their children read. If you can't make this week please feel free to arrange a different time with me. Just a reminder it is our assembly next Friday (20th) June.

Home learning- Maths.

We have had a fantastic week in Year 2 and it was really hard to choose who to praise this week! The children have thoroughly enjoyed reading and looking at the story 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. We are carrying on with this next week.

In Maths this week we have been looking at word problems and multiplications. I have sent home some home learning for Grasshoppers, Butterflies, Bees and Ladybirds. Can I ask for these to be back on Tuesday please.

Spellings have also been sent home. If your child did not come home with any spellings then please catch a member of Year 2 in the morning next week and we will give you a spare copy.

I hope that you have a fantastic weekend! Keep the home learning coming, it has been brilliant seeing so many of you showing me what you can do it home.

Year 2 team.

A study of Roald Dahl begins!

Welcome back!

It is great to hear all of the fantastic adventures Year 2 have been on in the holidays. Thank you very much for all of the brilliant home learning on Roald Dahl. We have looked at these pieces today and they will all be on our home learning display very soon! Talking of displays...have you had a chance to look at our Mary Anning display in the classroom? All of the children's reports are now on the wall along with their fossils. Have you seen our super hero VCOP display? Not sure what VCOP stands for? Year 2 all know that we have Violet Vocabulary, Captain Connective, Incredible Opener and Doctor Punctuation up on our wall to help them with their writing.

This week we have delved back in to our learning and we have started off our Literacy with looking at 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. We are going to be looking at this text for the next couple of weeks. We will be looking at all of the interesting characters, interviewing, comparing and thinking about all the fantastic adjectives and WOW words we can use to describe the chocolate factory!

Next week parents are welcome to come in to our Guided Reading sessions in the classroom. All of these lessons start at roughly 11.45 and last until we break for lunch at 12.30. If you would like to know when you child will be reading with me then please see me in the mornings and I can let you know and I will note down when you are coming in. Reading is such an important skill for young children to learn, I hope that the lessons will show you how to support your children when reading at home.
