Have you ever eaten rock?

As part of our Jurassic coast topic Year 2 today made some sedimentary rock. The special part about it was that it was edible! We have been looking at how fossils are formed over time and how layers are built up. To show this first hand we grated milk and white chocolate and then layered it in a see through container. We used chocolate chips as fossils and compacted the layers down with a spoon. After we had chilled the rocks in the fridge for an hour we were able to cut the rocks and expose the layers and fossils. All of the children loved doing this and of course enjoyed destroying the rocks (by eating them).

Below is the instructions if you fancied doing this again at home:

Making Chocolate Rocks

Serves a class of 30

Ingredients

200g grated milk or dark chocolate

        200g grated white chocolate

  2. Place 2-3 teaspoons of grated milk or dark chocolate into the cup.
  3. Place 2-3 teaspoons of grated white chocolate into the cup.
  4. Repeat with a second layer of milk or dark chocolate.
  5. Fold the cling film over the top.
  6. Push down hard with fingers until the chocolate feels like is has stuck together.
  7. Pull out gently and unwrap.
  8. Break the rock in half to reveal the layers.
  9. Put a some of this rock to one side and use the rest to make metamorphic rock.

Making our own apps

First of all I would like to apologise for the lack of blogs this week! We have had a very busy week in Year 2. We started off the week with a visit from Harold in the Life Education van. The children learnt all about their feelings and how to keep our bodies healthy.

In Literacy this week the children have been writing their own rhyming poems. It has been great reading them, hopefully we will have some more poetry next week about an adventure the children would like to go on.

In ICT the children have been working on Espresso coding. This week they were set the challenge to create their own app (character), they had to draw their own background, add buttons and a code to make their app move if specific buttons were pressed. We had some amazing results! They have now been placed on espresso coding online so if you get a chance you can take a look!

I am sure you all are aware but the children managed to get all of their crystals in the jar this week and so they can now have a prize. Throughout the week the children have been placing their ideas down for what they would like. We had all sorts of ideas from magicians, candy floss, going to the beach and parties! We placed them all in a bowl and pulled out 'Pizza Party', so as a special treat for working so hard as a team the children got to make their own slice of pizza in Golden Time this week.

As the weather is hot at the moment please can we make sure that the children have sun hats, sun cream applied, healthy snacks/lunches and lots of water.

Thank you, enjoy the sun!

Containers, tubes, boxes all needed please!

In music this term we are looking at sounds in our environment and sounds that we like to listen to. In a couple of weeks the children are going to start to make their very own musical instruments out of materials that are used everyday. Today they have experimented with all of the musical instruments to decide what instrument they want to make. This is where the help from home is vital!

We are asking for any materials/recyling that is clean and safe (no sharp edges/glass) to be bought in to school. We are looking for anything that can be used to make instruments. For example: tissue boxes, cereal boxes, elastic bands, old pieces of wood, tubes, shells, containers, marbles, bottle lids, plastic bottles, tin cans the list goes on!

As soon as the instruments are finished we will let you all know and show them off in our classroom.

Have a great weekend and we will see you next week

Looking at the biggest bite in Dorset!

Year 2 have had a fantastic trip today to the museum. Everyone walked lovely along the way and we made it just in time. The children were involved in three different activities; fossil dig, Jurassic coast quiz and a talk by Mary Anning. We saw the famous 'sea monster' and looked at dinosaur bones and skeletons that were 130 million years old!!!

We all learnt a lot about fossils, dinosaurs and the Jurassic coast. After having our lunch at the museum we enjoyed the sunshine by having a run around in the park and then walked very slowly back to school!

Making our coastal scene and tennis!

We have had a very exciting day today! The children had to work collaboratively to make their very own coastline today. They needed to listen to each others ideas and use all of the resources available to them to make a coastal scene. Below are the pictures of the scenes.

They all looked brilliant! We had surf boards, cliffs, palm trees, houses, seaweed and much much more!

After lunch we also had a tennis taster session. Year 2 enjoyed playing a number of games where they needed to control a tennis ball using a racket.

Hope you have a fantastic bank holiday weekend. Good luck for all of the girls that are in the dance show. See you on Tuesday for our trip to the museum!
